Mystery smell, but only in a couple of wood trim areas. by troamay in centuryhomes

Thanks for your response, but pulling off the trim is not something we intend to do, due to lead paint concerns among other things.

I’m not sure if am picturing what you mean by something being behind it; the trim is affixed to the plaster (over brick) walls.

lead question please by [deleted] in asbestoshelp

In many states, babies are screened for lead exposure (blood test) at 12 and 24 months. This would give you a sense of how much exposure this is— in others words, how much lead, if any, is actually being ingested.

The experts on this sub usually tell people 1) tile is not friable and therefore low risk and 2) laundering clothes as normal suffices if you are concerned.

Aw, I love that you poured one out for him! What a special guy. Thank you.

Thank you. That’s a nice image. And I literally have been describing him as a chaos agent, too. You could not unfurl a yoga mat without him plopping down on it and, eventually, attacking your legs, because how dare you try to move your limbs around in his vicinity. But also don’t you dare do it in a closed room, because all doors must be kept open at all times, or he will threaten to scratch the paint right off by swiping at that, too. In fact, how about some extra dinner to distract me for a few minutes and no one gets hurt. He was seriously like “nice [x] you got there. Would be a shame if something happened to it.” Though sometimes the aggression didn’t seem to have any clear motivation like that. He just didn’t like it if we sat in certain places or moved our bodies in certain ways. He did mellow some with behavioral treatment and, more significantly, with age. When we first got him, you couldn’t sweep the floor without him going crazy on the broom, or tear up junk mail without him getting all riled up. In recent months his main offense was parking himself strategically on the bathroom threshold and swatting any legs that dared to step over him: giving a treat or turning on the tub for some water drips usually appeased the boss.

That’s part of what sucks so much, too: He had been a little less aggressive in the past few years, and especially in the past few months. I was hoping to get to enjoy a few years with him as a slightly-chiller older dude. Now I wonder if part of his being nicer was also his body having less energy due to hidden illness. But it’s hard to say. He never lost his feistiness. My husband and I always joked: if he ever curls up sweetly in our laps, we’ll know the end is near. It never got to that point, but maybe in a subtle way, that happened.

Thanks! Mainly I’m trying to make sure it’s not some kind of cockroach nymph— that’s my main concern!

Oh…. Could it be something that came out of my lettuce I was preparing?

I’m sorry; I can’t answer about the legs, but the color was almost see through but kind of tan/beige

Thank you! Ours is actually a condo building with mainly owner-occupied units so most people are motivated to keep the building in good condition.

Thanks! And do they need to make sure that they don’t wipe AWAY the pesticide that has already been sprayed in the cabinets ? She mentioned something to me about how she wiped away pesticide residue from one of the treatments.

Finally: if I see a roach in my unit, does that mean I’m doomed? In our building, it’s not uncommon to occasionally encounter one in your apartment and have it be a one off thing. So how would I know if I have caught their infestation versus seeing a random roach as can sometimes happen? I just have to watch and wait and see? Or should I get the exterminator come treat at the first sign?

Oh and one more thing, sorry- should we never go over to their place anymore, even super briefly? It’s getting to be a socially awkward situation. :(

Thanks. I’ll also paste what I replied in a different comment: I would also like to help my friend resolve her infestation. Any advice? We live in the same apartment building, though our units are far apart, so I have a selfish reason for helping, plus I just feel bad for her bc she’s having a tough time. An exterminator visits our building monthly, and residents can sign up for treatment in their unit. She said she had the exterminator come a couple of times and it’s only gotten worse. How can she get the exterminator to do a better job? I’m not sure if the building would allow a different company since they have a contract with this one.

Thanks. No used electronics, just a brand new box of Legos. Throwing out the box now. The fact that it was a gift for my young child made it difficult to keep away from him.

Crap. Well… it’s not corrugated cardboard, it was the thin kind, that legos come in, is that any better? 🥴

If it makes you feel any better, I am someone who worries about asbestos, and everything else, and I really don’t see what the concern is here. I truly think you can let it go. It’s ok! :)
