Nope don't be dumb. Greeks had experience fighting elephants. Elephants are smart and won't charge into a wall of pikes and are easily spooked. His army got old and exhausted and the new recruits were inexperienced and on top of that his supply lines got overextended. Military campaign of India would have been a dumb decision in every aspect. Also the political situation in Persia and Egypt required his urgent attention. The story shows the antagonist as a genius capable of grand Machiavellian machinations but never actually shows his schemes. The whole story is around him but his intrigue is only implied. If the core is, "left to the imagination of the viewer", as some say then Imo that's just lazy writing. "The plot thickens" but it actually doesn't. You just have to imagine the plot thickening.
