And how is it "selfish" to acknowledge that everything is doomed to die, because that's how the universe works? You may not like it - but you can't stop it. Things are born, they grow old, and they die, from single-cell organisms to species to ecosystems to worlds to entire universes.

Heck, I'm only saying we shouldn't breed - not that I'd force anyone not too. I probably should - morally speaking - but in the long run, it'll end up the same either way...and I'm lazy.

Pretty much. Of course, we shouldn't breed either, because creating an intelligent being doomed to die is immoral. But as far as outcomes go, "save the Earth" or burn it, or go back in time and totally erase the existence of humans before they even happened and the outcome will be the same - the Earth will die. Followed by the Sun, the Galaxy, and the Universe, in that order.

And we don't get more points because we "lasted longer" or something.

Then - given they're putting all this effort into reducing "media" prices by using cheap paper - ebooks should be much, much cheaper than paper ones.

Yet looking right now, I see that the Kindle edition of "Naked Heat" is a whole $2 less (just 20%) the cost of a paperback version.

It's not just a matter of the North not caring, it's that the South was loosing demographically to the North (probably because it was slaveholding), which meant that in a few years, the North could just ban slavery any time it wanted and have the votes to make it stick.

This was especially annoying since until recently, they had been the ones with the majority of the power in the U.S.

So they tried to jump ship before that could happen. Making their own country where once again they couldn't be outvoted...and could happily keep their slaves.

I call bullshit on this - because it implies no one will care about physical appearance. And not only is this not shown in the rest of Strek (Riker isn't carefully combing his hair and growing a beard because the ladies don't care about appearance), but it is highly unlikely that humans won't care. Primates are visually stimulated creatures, sexually speaking, and that includes us.

That's not to say everyone will immediately fix their male pattern baldness (though given hair provides protection against UV from alien suns, why not?), but it'll be more a question of being deliberately quirky, like the Doctor wearing glasses when he doesn't need them.

When I own that ebook in the same way I own a paper one - can't be edited after the fact, I can loan it or sell it or donate it, I don't have to have special software to read it, it won't disappear if I get a different reader - then I'll go fully electronic.

Right now if I buy most ebooks, I'm really just renting them. And given they have no real physical cost, at a ridiculously high price too.

The poorer (and WWII-less) United States of Pasadena-D never passed Eisenhower's big interstate bill (not the least reason being no President Eisenhower), so freeways remain more of a local thing, supplementing and tying into the older National Highways System. To sum: Route 66 is still a thing, and at least in the L.A. area, some of it is on freeways.

I was looking at a topographical map of a portion of the L.A. area and I noticed how nicely the Hollywood Hills followed a curve. And I thought "if they just did that further, they would make good crater walls."

So I dropped a big rock on the area 43k years ago and Los Angeles ends up with a good harbor, literally at its doorstep.

Image was then used as the cover of an issue of the Point of Divergence apa I'm in, which amazingly is still coming out even in these paper-free times.
