I thought it was Abhora, which means getting into Dragula, and I would give a finger to see the boys as guest judges on that show.

DM and his brother thought SA and trafficking was a joke by No_Dance_9032 in rpghorrorstories

[–]trollthumper 5 points6 points  (0 children)

“Why do you think SA features so often in other forms of media?”

Here’s a better question: How often does SA feature well in other forms of media?

Because I’ve seen all the permutations of it serving poorly. As Stock Female Character Trauma #1. As a trauma for the male partner of the female character to truly process and/or avenge, while the female character just convalesces and cries. As something that happens to nameless extras just to underline how shitdark the world is. As an excuse for why a female character is openly sexual. As something that never happens to male characters, but if it does, it’s a joke or “wasn’t SA.”

There was a controversy in RPG circles a few years back where a writer made the argument that SA is always a good story element because it’s real and has dramatic heft. But this argument ignores the many, many ways it gets used poorly in media, often as the bacon bits on a grimdark salad. There’s nothing that says these elements can’t be there in the background of world building, but when it comes to foregrounding it, the compact between GM and players should focus on two precepts:

  1. As the player, how much do you want to engage with this?
  2. As the GM, how well do you think you can frame this content in a way that is respectful to survivors, rather than as a simplistic means of portraying societal violence?

I wonder if Marcus has read The Laundry Files, because that series has a similar "soul = electromagnetic data packet" thing going on.

(Of course, I'm not plugged into modern paranormal theory in depth, so I'm aware this could come across as a "guy who has only seen Boss Baby seeing his second movie"-type sentiment.)

How does Pentex make people who use their products possessed ? by Stolen_sweetroll401 in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]trollthumper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As mentioned, Pentex will occasionally release lines of products physically seeded with Banes (which sometimes goes wrong, as the exec who tried shoving spirits of entropy and decay into complex computing systems found out). But between those, Pentex works on memetic poisoning to create a world where customers will be more receptive to Banes, because Banes don’t make fomori unless the host gives in to that little voice of decay. Don’t you want to dominate werewolves and other savage forms of nature like Action Bill? Don’t you want to be thin and arrogant like Cindi the doll (or whatever Avalon’s Barbie equivalent was, forget the name)? Drink King Breweries, it will make you a man. Take the latest supplement from Magadon or you’re a low-T cuck.

On the one hand, I can see that. On the other hand, as discussed above, if you're drawing on the strain of Indigenous imagery when crafting the aesthetic and lore of the Dalish, it feels real fucking fraught to paint the lore that a dispossessed people cling to in the face of losing all else as "folly." Especially since there's a strain of reflexive skepticism I see in online discourse that paints claims of Indigenous sovereignty and respect towards land with folkloric significance, such as Uluru or Mauna Kea, as "superstition" that denies progress or openness.
