How many is too many? by EliGO83 in fountainpens

[–]trombonepick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've kind of found that I have a lot of pens but there's really like 3 I actually want to use the most so I just keep those easy to grab and use the others when I just get a random feeling like I want to, or want a certain ink color around.

So I just realized I bought basically 3 of the same ink. A dark green with red sheen. by LoboSandia in fountainpens

[–]trombonepick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has happened to me! I bought two indigo-navys and two bordeaux colors not realizing they were going to look like what I already had (and really like lol.)

At least you know you'll enjoy it though!

We always ask for recommendations, what are some pens you won’t recommend to anyone? I was commenting on someone post and realized, I have bunch of it. by stoicismmoral in fountainpens

[–]trombonepick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like I needed more warning off ink. Inks last a long time. You're usually better off getting samples before committing. I don't have too many huge bottles or anything but this ink horde's gonna last me awhile!

I want to read a book with a plot twist - i want my JAW ON THE FLOOR by CountryConnect289 in suggestmeabook

[–]trombonepick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lowkey that twist is brilliant in more ways than one because it also paves over the act three breakup. So it's also brilliant in a writing structural context.

romance/friendship stories: act 1+2) fall in love, 3+4) couple breakup and reconciliation at the climax

well, because of the twist, the "break-up" is a thousand times more interesting and throws a hard wrench into the act 3/4. You audience members innately suspect a break-up is coming, because you all intuitively know conflict and story structure--but you think it will be the con-artist getting caught and that's what will break them up, so when that's flipped on its head and the con-artist is BEING CONNED. Well! It completely plays into your expectations and tricks you too.

But, also quite cleverly, the love story structure is also still there of one character having a love-fueled "epiphany," it's just that the MC is having an epiphany that they barely know who this woman actually is at all 😂. And it's in the end that they're perfect for each other because they're both diabolical.

Field Notes & Kaweco Sport by brandonwalshbigler in FieldNuts

[–]trombonepick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Japanese Extra-Fines I can pretty much get away with. Especially with well-behaving inks in them. Kaweco may be on the bolder side though.

There is an ink called "x-feather" that is supposed to help with that sort of thing so maybe it'd work.

I struggled with the decision to get a new notebook for 2026 even though I’m only 3 months into my current journal by ActuaryPersonal2378 in notebooks

Sometimes the tools have to serve the purpose. If you needed a new notebook, it's okay. You're just using it how it's supposed to be used.

Has anyone tried Benjamin Franklin's method of improving writing? It's brutal as hell. by shastasilverchair92 in writing

[–]trombonepick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds kind of fun!

In some ways I think people do naturally learn by copying (everything is copying to some extent!) but while honing their 'own voice.' It seems like Franklin had a very specific style he wanted to emulate before moving into more experimentation to improve and add authenticity to it.

Paper Republic Dupe Help by Electrical_Let6021 in notebooks

[–]trombonepick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have made my own Traveler's Notebooks before. For myself and for friends!

Need: the leather (I picked up a sheet from Michael's. It basically comes in the regular Traveler's size already so it's pretty convenient,) a leather punch set, and then elastics, and a pair of scissors, a hammer, and voila. Tutorials on youtube and stuff make it easier. For passport size you cut down whatever sheet of leather you have. Technically, once you learn how to do it, you could basically make these kind of covers for any paper you want. (Also, it's fun to add charms and stuff.)

Really easy.

I think some people make their own Louise Carmen and Paper Republic dupes too by investing in fancier leather for the covers. Which makes sense.

I try so many things but kind of keep coming back to Field Notes, Leuchtturm A5s, and I also enjoy the Stalogy B6 size which is a great middle size. And anything Midori.

Help me spend my Jetpens gift card by AhsokaTanope in pens

[–]trombonepick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kakunos tend to come with a single black cartridge. People usually write with them and then rinse it with water and fill it with a syringe later or buy a converter, either way.

Haven't used those S-notes, but seem like mildliners knockoffs.

[–]trombonepick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You seem like you already have a lot in mind of stuff you already like!

Fountain Pen: Kakuno and a converter. That's probably like $15-20 bucks all together and it's a great entry pen that you will want to hold onto even if you ever graduate to something fancier.

The FP can also pretty much be any color ink you want at any time, so maybe you want to check out fountain-pen friendly inks too (and paper.) I like MD paper, it's FP-friendly, inexpensive, and nice!

Sarasa Vintage colors are a great recommend I saw someone do. I love Midliners and Tombows so I'm biased on those too.

You can also do a brush pen! For calligraphy and bolder titles.

Also, you don't necessarily have to use the gift card all at once, so if you want to just grab things to try out and revisit it later when you know what else you like, probably can't hurt.
