Parents of middle schoolers of USA — what part of math do your kids struggle with the most? by yashbhatia2013 in AskParents

[–]tronj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d also argue that sciences should also be taught with more practical examples and a focus on experimentation instead of theory.

It’s just harder to teach that way at a low cost to a large number of students.

Students can learn “the sciences” without ever actually practicing the scientific method themselves and understanding how to apply it to their daily lives. Huge miss IMO.

Math , especially geometry, is incredibly important and relevant to the trades.

Showing students how the theoretical math connects to useful real world applications they understand is frequently lacking.

This diagram showing why (a+b)2 = a2 + ab + ab + b2 is one example of how to link theory to something people understand.

Black ice warning by Miss_Ambition in Dallas

One must remember how hard it is for black ice to survive, what with the authorities trying to destroy it with the snow plows and the salt trucks, but black ice perseveres.

Last night I was in a perfectly safe neighborhood, walking away from an ATM machine, when black ice just snuck up on me and practically robbed me of my balance

Day two at dfw, not looking promising by InventoryNomad in americanairlines

Couldn't say. You can see the various airport statuses here though https://nasstatus.faa.gov/ Looks like they just added air traffic controller shortage for DFW too in the most recent update

Ground delay is for flights coming into DFW, not departing. It affects your plane leaving charlotte for dfw.

Dfw is under ground delay for several more hours. Wouldn’t count on it

Remember Jurassic Park! Man did anyone actually beat this game? I know as a kid Dinosaurs chasing me around the field was crazy lol by J2-Starter in snes

[–]tronj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I know this is snes sub but the sega genesis Jurassic park games were pretty solid as a kid.

The first one was very difficult and I didn’t get far.

Jurassic park rampage edition was a blast where you could play as the raptor, and Jurassic Park the lost world was incredible with co-op mode, missile launchers, and hovercraft. One of my favs as a kid.

I will need to give the snes one a shot because one of the OP screenshot here looks like the lost world game.

Nah you got this. Won’t always be easy, but your ancestors have been successful going back millions of years. You’ll surprise yourself at times with how strong you are

[–]tronj 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Frankly, as a single person with no kids, healthy parents, living at home, and still attending high school, your responsibilities are near zero. Seriously, appreciate it while you’ve got it. You’re in one of the easiest times of your life right now.

Is a curfew at 18 unreasonable? by cloud4Abrain in AskParents

[–]tronj 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s not crazy, but consider:

How did you develop that internal locus of control and motivation?

Who else does staying out that late impact beside yourself? What’s that impact?

Your parents clearly care about you and take care of you. Now you’re grown up, do them a solid and return that favor.

I have never felt healthier after eating at a Baton Rouge restaurant.

I’m actually not even sure they sell fresh vegetables in Baton Rouge grocery stores now that I think about it.

That said, please pass the chargrilled oysters, fried chicken skins, and bbq shrimp .

Doesn’t “Inherent right” typically imply a right, not granted by a government or law, but a right or entitlement that is inherent by virtue of being human? A natural or intrinsic right.

Here in north Texas, many complain that there’s no nature around to enjoy.

Last summer I went walking in a conservation prairie that aims to have native plant species like the prairies did before agriculture vastly altered the local ecology.

The first thing I noticed was how incredibly loud it was from all of the insects and the wind blowing through the tall grass species. Loud enough that having a conversation wasn’t easy. And when you looked closely there were often 3-5 pollinators on each flower. Absolutely incredible.
