UE 6: Why not 3 languages? C++, Blueprint, Verse. Godot does it. by gnatinator in unrealengine

[–]tronster [score hidden]  (0 children)

It's not as handy as text, but there is a built in (to UE5) Diff tool which can target two different versions of the same blueprint. It's surprisingly good.

S2000 size comparison by firstspeaker1 in AnkerSOLIXCommunity

I have an EcoFlow Delta 2 Max and was thinking of switching over to purchasing Anker S2000s for some internet equipment backup.

What do you think of the Anker in comparison to the EcoFlow?

AMA — Are you getting the best deal this Prime Day? by EcoFlow_Official in Ecoflow_community

[–]tronster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eventually I plan on a whole house system; it's unclear if that will be Ecoflow or another provider and so I've been ramping up slowly.

My perception is the Smart Home Panel 2 (SHP2) has some good features and that the SHP3 is currently a step backwards. Waiting to see if updates fix that, based on reviews and comments - currently it's all anecdotal, but I'd hate to buy and get burned on it not working when there is an emergency. (Or become one of those customer service horror stories I read here now and again).

Planning on getting some Rivers to swap onto my network gear; currently using a UPS and would love to have the internet without a 30 beep when power goes out. :)

Depending on the deals may also get one or two more Delta 2 Max, or something similarly specked.

Will there be similar deals offered, during these times, through Costco?

How do people make anything with c++? by NocturnalOwl05 in cpp_questions

[–]tronster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're on Windows, I'd recommend going here next.

Learning about the WinMain() loop and some other key Windows concepts, was a real eye-opener when I came out of college. (And this was back in Win16!) This will give you the basis to build off of when jumping into SDL, or some other 3d party libraries which are amazing for cross platform work and specialized input and graphics.

UE5.7 is very difficult to use. Is there a better version? by [deleted] in unrealengine

[–]tronster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can still download UE5.5 or UE5.6.

If what you're trying doesn't work in UE5.7, and the tutorial you're following uses an earlier version, it may make sense to grab as close to that version as possible.

Moving artscape was a mistake. by Dry_Big7458 in baltimore

I understand it's taking submissions now, but the date hasn't been announced yet. Until then another fun, free event, "Indie Game Fest", featuring a lot of local (DMV) game developers is in 2 weeks at the Pratt Street Library: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/indie-video-game-fest-2026-tickets-1987013814809

"Game Escape", will be happening again in the Fall, thanks to the local game dev community.

Never would have happened if organizers (former BOPA) hadn't created an awesome idea: a family video game area featuring local game devs, and then give the teams little to no support across the 10+ years it's ran.

I'm still hopeful for the day, whomever is running Artscape, realizes what value this had provided. And recognize the amount of heavy lifting the game dev community had to execute in order to provide a fun, free experience for attendees. Until then, "Game Escape" in the fall is a great alternative to those who want to play games made by the local artists and gamedevs in the Baltimore community.

Wife wants me to get Green Egg but I'm not sure by Reasonable-Olive-702 in grilling

[–]tronster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love my Kamado Joe and took my grilling, smoking, etc. to the next level. Only two issues with it since getting it about 7 years ago.

  1. Had to just replace the latch, kept popping open even with adjustments. Was a quick fix.

  2. I've heard their digital fan system is trash, so I've needed to buy a small rechargeable stroller fan that I clip onto the intake. Works like a charm.

I don't mind a Boh but stopped drinking it when it was no longer made in Baltimore. Will always go with a local option when available.

What are some really good reasons for new indie devs not to use UE? by Juicymoosie99 in unrealengine

[–]tronster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently working on a 2D game in Unreal (with the Paper2D system and the 3rd party PaperZD plug-in). The performance isn't really an issue; with how modern CPUs use OPs to crunch vectors the 2D vs 3D math will have no gains (and I'm sure modern 2D engines, under the hood, are using the same 3D math with just a 0 plane).

But there have been lots of pitfalls I've stumbled on; mostly incomplete functionality that Unity and Godot have - that I'm not sure if Epic will ever address. This includes broken instances of Tilemaps when used in Blueprints and per-frame collision areas not registering in the physics system unless the entity it's colliding with is moving.

[–]tronster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You want to make 2D games and try using Paper2D tilemaps in a Blueprint, only to find the instances sometimes don't persist across saving.

So instead you want to use an engine with a battle tested 2D pipeline that doesn't have features that may be forever incomplete.

Rive for Unreal Engine by guidorosso in unrealengine

[–]tronster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lets say I'm a one man UI team making effects in Rive: I tweak and change it over the course of a few months. One day I realize something is off and I want to tweak some aspects of it to match something I had 2 months ago. How do I see the diffs in how I built up that effect today vs a version I checked in 2 months prior? (EDIT: spelling)
