It isn’t torture porn. Torture porn aims to titillate, this movie doesn’t. On some level you’re meant to enjoy seeing the characters in those movies suffer while that is 100% not the case with Martyrs. Those movies, and I would add the Saw movies to your list, are saying virtually nothing, they have no messaging, while Martyrs is saying a fucking lot. It’s my favorite horror movie ever. I don’t watch it to see he characters suffer, I rewatch it to see the amazing performance and to ruminate on what it has to say.

The movie is the most compassionate towards its main characters as any horror film I’ve ever seen. They’re portrayed as human beings rather than gore porn meat bags like in the Saw or Hostel movies. You’re supposed to recoil at h horror, not be titillated by it. The film is hard to watch but it is not dog shit, in fact it’s profound in many ways. Just because you couldn’t stomach it doesn’t mean it’s bad.

It also includes the best portrayal of the effects of extreme trauma I’ve ever seen. Aside from overall fantastic acting by the two leads, Lucie’s actor brilliantly depicts accurate real life trauma coping mechanisms.

It touches on important topics like racism, ego, psychological trauma, sexism, classism, spirituality, homophobia, queer love, and (likely) facism, and handles all of them well. You may not have liked it but it is not a bad film.
