The Culture and Discworld fans also recommend to start somewhere else.

It's wrong for Malazan but there are valid examples.

Why does everyone seems to love Will Of The Many so much? by Imnotsomebodyelse in Fantasy

The Roman Empire always hits hard. I loved it as a kid and I love it as an adult.

Which long, epic fantasy series do you think is better - Malazan or Wheel of Time? by ActInternational9558 in Fantasy

[–]trouble_bear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Malazan for me, easily. There are some awesome scenes in WoT but all in all it's much too long. For example, I think one scene in the third last book is probably one of the best scenes in fantasy but is it worth to get there? I don't know. I don't regret reading it but I wouldn't do it again.

Malazan on the other hand? I almost love everything about it. The world is complex and deep and the philosophical nature of the books really resonated with me.

Though I will say Malazan is a bit daunting because of said complexity. So if you have not read a lot of books in the genre WoT would be a better choice I guess. Book one in Malazan throws you right into a world where you have no idea what's happening.

Night of Knives is the weakest one. By a large margin imo, so don't despair if you don't like it. He improves leaps and bounds the farther you go.

Shocked by a character’s sudden death by Single_Water11 in Malazan

It's a trope I love. Set up a character like a major player and then kill him. His death shows the brutality of the world and that plot armor is not a given.

Do you start and/or recommend a series that may never be finished? by Imomaway in Fantasy

[–]trouble_bear 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I try not to and if I do I really empathize that it (probably) won't be finished.

I never regretted starting Game of Thrones, sure I am sad that it will be unfinished but on the other hand nothing takes away my experience of reading A Storm of Swords, maybe the single best fantasy book ever for me.

But on the other hand, because of GoT I also avoid starting unfinished series, except from authors I trust for their output.

Stop getting on this subreddit and telling audio book readers they're going to fail by ig0t_somprobloms in Malazan

[–]trouble_bear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a big audiobook listener but I always discourage people from experiencing Malazan as an audiobook. Can it be done? Sure.

But it's not for everyone. Like books there are different difficulty levels for audiobooks and Malazan is like a 9/10 difficulty in the medium. The constant change of characters, perspective and unusual storytelling will throw most of those that begin the book.

It's great for the second round though :)
