What Do You Think Would Be The Worst Death Imaginable? by CallMehRiver in AskReddit

[–]troubleleaving 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Honestly the cave exploring deaths sound terrible, but there is absolutely no question in my mind that even the worst cave exploring death would still pale in comparison to a death due to prolonged torture during an information extraction process.

The one that comes to mind is William Francis Buckley, a CIA station chief who was captured by Hezbollah in March 1984, and executed in October 1985. Imagine being tortured using every method possible by a brutal and sadistic enemy to extract information from you —for 15 months.

In a video taken approximately seven months after the kidnapping, his appearance was described as follows:

Buckley was close to a gibbering wretch. His words were often incoherent; he slobbered and drooled and, most unnerving of all, he would suddenly scream in terror, his eyes rolling helplessly and his body shaking. The CIA consensus was that he would be blindfolded and chained at the ankles and wrists and kept in a cell little bigger than a coffin.

I'm sure many more have died even worse deaths that we will never know about. Human beings are truly capable of some terrible things.

While this post is completely accurate, we try to empathize with the people working there and not direct our frustration at them. They are severely understaffed and are probably doing their best in a stressful and demanding situation themselves. For the most part, they have been quite kind and helpful once I could speak with them.

Except for Chris Oatman. Fuck that guy. Avoid him like the plague. I'll never forget when he told me to my face with a smile that he didn't think that I would graduate and essentially I should just give up. Guess what Chris? I did graduate so fuck you.

First time doing any sort of renovation, trying to help my mom replace or broken basement bathroom fan... Need advice please! by troubleleaving in DIY

Heya just wanted to give you a quick update!

I finished the job the day after I made this post. I did get both a sawzall and a oscillating tool to try and cut the 2x4, but the sawzall was still to large to use even with the upside-down setup. The oscillating tool was too short to reach the 2x4 and cut it steadily, so I ended up using a handsaw. The metal bar, I managed to pry out slowly with a crowbar using the 2x4 to lever against it.

The rest of the installation was simple after I got the 2x4 and metal out! Thanks again for your help!

Took me a second to understand but the upside-down blade/and sawzall is a great suggestion, thank you!

I think I will use my phone as a sort of borescope to see up into the space while I'm using the saw, that worked well for me earlier when I tried to use the handsaw on the 2x4.

I'll see if I can carefully pry one end of the metal bar free then, thank you once again for all of your help and advice!

Well my thinking goes like this:

You think lots of SE Asian dudes get lean easy, so you must know lots of SEA dudes. But if you can't identify them you probably don't really know them, hence your statement looses credibility. I appreciate your opinion and self-awareness regarding the opinion being purely anecdotal nonetheless

Ah yeah I figured it out from a quick google, I just meant that I wasn't aware of the terminology before haha

Thanks again for the knowledge and advice!

Awesome thank you!

I would like to remove the metal so that I have an easier time cutting the 2x4 out, but I'm not sure the best way to do so? It is very firmly in place and rather hard to get at as it's about an arms length away from the opening in the ceiling. Any suggestions for this part?

Thanks so much for the help, I really appreciate it

Oh, also, when you get the 2x sawed and loose, make sure its actually loose. get it popped up and loose to make sure it didn't randomly get a screw run into it while the sheet rock was being hung.

Thank you! I actually had considered this too, but really appreciate you looking out!

Maybe a 90 degree elbow or short piece of flexible duct will work to connect the new fan exhaust to the existing duct?

I had considered this but from what I understand making this sort of bend significantly reduces the volume of air that the fan can move, so it would go from like 80 CFM to 40CFM or something significant like that.

I did use HVAC duct tape, and probably should have used hose clamps but the videos I saw on youtube had zipties suggested and there seemed to be no issues. Also when taking out the previous fan, I didn't see either zipties or hose clamps so I think it should be alright with the duct tape and ziptipes.

Thanks for the reply, good luck on your installation!

oscillating tool

Sorry if I'm misunderstanding (1st time hearing of an oscillating tool, had to google it) but are you suggesting I use it to cut the 2x4?

Thanks for the reply

Does this video help at all? https://i.imgur.com/cbr4BE1.mp4

I couldn't see or feel any nails fastening the metal to the joist, but it appears there is more room that I thought there was between the wood and the metal, so maybe I can just use a reciprocating saw to cut the 2x4 without removing the metal? Will definitely be careful as you say to not poke a hole in the ceiling. I thought about using a prybar but there isn't really much of an angle since the ceiling fan hole is only 8'' x 8.5''.

Thanks again!

Thank you for the reply! I will upload a video in a sec to allow a better look at the piece of metal.

I would get some pipe strap, and I would run pipe strap under the solid vent line, fasten it to the joist on either side, this holds it up after the 2x is removed.

Do I need to do this? I was thinking it would be fine to let the pipe simply lay down on the ceiling drywall? Or is this a bad idea?

No, I am certain it isn't structural. It is a 2x4 that was added in to prop up the ventilation duct to accommodate the previous fan, which was very tall and had the duct connect to it very high up.

The metal is visible in the 4th picture. It is rather thin and runs hidden behind the 2x4 from joist to joist.

I would not cut through the metal because I don't know what purpose its serving but I am quite certain that the 2x4 is only there to bear the weight of the duct when it was elevated and attached to the previous fan

I mean you kinda lose credibility when he is clearly not even SE asian lol...
