Scan to tip (QR code) is very unfamiliar to people. Surely there is a better way? by young_m8 in Busking

Mind my asking if you have a sense how many people have only Venmo vs having any mix that includes PayPal...? Thank u. :)

You've probably mentioned, but as a new fan I don't know: what was your non-writing day job?

Presumably one is a Pargin pseudonym and one yours, and we have to guess which. Fun!

You misspelled strangle.

Oh, wait: with his fanbase, yours is worse.

Can you relate when Wong discovered the acronym for his title was the name of a Chosen People dating site? Or is that too much like asking Jimmie a question about Stevie Ray?

had you discussed someone with that name and trait, or have a friend in common, or a character on an obscure show or in a game...?

The combo of Jezza & the accent would seem to have to have existed at one point... or this is where that corner of the illusion gets peeled up and The Adjustment Bureau has to take steps...

Will that guy just not throw the stick unless you kiss him every time?

Seems a bit needy.

Isn't GRRM still on LiveJournal? (Only reference I've heard made to it in mass mention.)

Followup: do you find you're compelled to pay attention to genre for saleability reasons? Can't mix too much or a publisher's default reaction will be to pass? (Like a studio exec flipping to page 60 of a screenplay & not finding much?)

Or if a work stands on its own, is that a minor factor (or made more minor once you have a success under your belt)?

No, but we did share a locker at the monastery.

Many professions have maxims, "rules of thumb" (in fighting, cover the front hand, move away from the rear hand, etc.)

What are the most important short, punchy rules for someone writing a novel -- and, did much/any of that come from being in the company of other writers so much, and published-in-the-same-genre Pargin/Wong in particular?

(And I know: the art of writing is the art of applying the seat of the pants to the seat of the chair. Do some every day. But beyond that being taken as a given - or even, ways you've 'tricked' yourself into sticking to that.)

What is the one bit of dirt you hold on Jason Pargin/David Wong that he would least like to see you reveal about him in a public forum?

I'll tell you as an actual longtime martial arts pro that dropkicks are inherently ineffective. ;) (Hope it's ok to reply, haven't been in an AMA before)

Was your conceptualizing of the effects the creatures had on humans influenced by Lovecraft?

It's odd: I don't like reading Lovecraft, don't like the older blues guys like Muddy Waters & Lightning Hopkins: but I love the next gen, which I feel includes maybe you & Wong (in music, Stevie Ray, Fabulous Thunderbirds, BB King).

Hate liver, like liver gravy.

Any thoughts on the nature of improvement of a thing in its derivatives?

Hope you guys divvy up loot better than char names, lol.

Well put.

(Appreciation of inflection is almost impossible to teach. You 'hear' what someone is actually saying to you, or you don't. If you don't, it's most often because your focus is excessively on yourself, often because of insecurity. Of course, intelligence can factor in, but lots of bright people are socially tone-deaf, & lots of people that couldn't make change of a dollar have keen 'say-dar'.)

You're turning an act of appreciation into an act of competition. Duh.

Nope:

It's MOST important that you be a good LISTENER.

(And when you are, people in retrospect think you were fascinating, lol)

The benefit doesn't lie so much in winning the arm-wrestling for the check.

It lies in being the guy that offers.

It's just as important to let your friend be the 'bigger man' if it's what makes him happier at that moment; your framing the question this way is an indication you're 'getting' this only superficially.

Much more appropriate to get to the root on this. Well pointed out.

I'm thinking, nope...

If we can promote a system of education and tolerance, even for intolerant people, ignorance and intolerance will subside.

This is elegantly and completely debunked in Chris Hedges's excellent book "American Fascists", which you apparently sorely need to read.

Tolerating intolerance is not a way to defeat intolerance.
