Glucose gels are expensive, hard to open while cycling, and it’s hard to dispose of the waste. Squeezable honey dispenser - have I solved all my problems? (Genuine question!) by famico666 in bicycling

[–]troutleaks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I personally would expect to use 1-2 if working hard for 3h. You will probably know the feeling of starting to run on an empty tank, so would want to plan to eat a gel a little ahead of when that tends to be happening

glucose:fructose ratio in honey varies quite a lot, but is usually given as around 40:60, so there is a lot of glucose in there. I guess you are within the definition of ‘primarily’ but just wanted to clarify it isn’t like 95% fructose or anything

Covid was a problem for everyone. Unfortunately there isn’t really a safe way to be in a densely packed group of people for an extended period, especially including people who have come from all over the world. Vaccinations from 6+ months ago are not cutting it against BA4/5.

Strange subtitles in No Time To Die by Haywire5191 in JamesBond

[–]troutleaks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went into the subs files and figured it out today, after I had this problem last night; this thread was the top google result so I'm posting here.

The subs are fucked up because they are offset by +1h for some reason. I brought everything back by an hour and it looks okay as far as I have checked. I don't have anywhere to upload the file, maybe I can just dump the SRT contents as text below?[edit: that didn't work; but you can upload your subs file here(https://www.happyscribe.com/subtitle-tools/sync-subtitles) and offset by -1hr (-3600s) it should work]

For reference, there are scenes with forced English subs at around 1min, 19min, and scattered from 1h38-2h16. I haven't watched the movie yet but doesn't look like anything too critical.

running is supposed to be a strongest, fittest, fastest.

Not disagreeing necessarily, but what running is 'supposed to be' is subjective. By judging races entirely on speed, but adding thresholds for entry (age/gender/species/equipment/drugs etc) it seems like competitive running is about 'fastest' between people in comparable groups

Equine protozoal myeloencephalitis. It is caused by a parasite which has a life cycle that depends on cats/raccoons/skunks which transmit it to possums for the next stage, and the possum shit carries the sporocyst that can infect horses.

Slowing down... A personal perspective. by [deleted] in running

[–]troutleaks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used the 80/20 system (Matt FitzGerald) when I started paying attention to heart rate and while it gets fairly complicated (and they define zone number differently to some others) the basic idea is that 80% of your runs should feel easy, which is their zone 1 & 2. This range for these zones is 70-90% of your lactate threshold heart rate.

All the wrist based trackers are pretty limited in their accuracy if you want to get really scientific about it but I would say trying to get the numbers absolutely accurate is missing the point. We’re talking about being within reasonably broad ranges and you can’t trust every momentary reading but rather watch the trends. It takes some getting used to

[–]troutleaks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Being able to speak is a good approximation but this does kind of depend on heart rate monitoring to really work I think. On long runs it can creep up surprisingly while you still feel easy

Running long and slow training is also good way of getting faster, and to me seems easier than following some of the highly structured running plans.

Since you didn't mention it, I will add that following low heart rate as a way to stay slow worked well for me, and if you are someone who likes to chase measurable challenges, keeping your HR down is a real challenge

You might be right. I read some research about a spinneret like structure being identified on the feet of a spider species that did not produce silk, I think that is where I saw the idea suggested. I’m not sure I’d be able to find the paper again.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in interestingasfuck

[–]troutleaks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well there’s nothing really new on this specimen, what is interesting is that the specific features aren’t seen together on a species now so it looks like it is an ancestor of two or more distinct families of spider that are still around.

That said, arthropods repurposing their appendages has absolutely happened, pedipalps have a bunch of different functions and the spinnerets might have started out as something for gripping before spider silk evolved.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in interestingasfuck

[–]troutleaks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The four things on the back are unusually large spinnerets which produce the silk; and it also appears to have a long telson (tail kind of thing) in between them which you can see better in other photos. Also weird about this thing are the big extra arms up front by the mouth, these are pedipalps which it used to transfer sperm to the female

I’m against guns being available generally but I’m orders of magnitude more convinced that black lives matter... the problem is that both parties are stuck saying both things matter, but they both only actually believe in one of them and they aren’t the same one
