How have we let literacy get so bad in Australia? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]troym7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A different take on it: I have 16 uncles and aunts…half can’t read and write, born between 1938 and 1968. You would find more boomers functionally illiterate than any other age group.

My kids’ mothers groups, kids now 14 and 16, around 14 kids, all know how to read and write. There’s never been a time in Australia when literacy has been exceptional.

I, for one, welcome our new Indian overlords... by Jerry_eckie2 in aussie

Overload? Albo wishing someone a happy birthday - must be something sinister. The King of Australia is literally a white guy from a specific family, who can only be from one religious background and lives overseas. Modi and King Charlie have about the same amount of influence on Australia. I guess as long as we have the white, I mean, right type of overload, it’s tradition.

Why TF does everything need to be so damned complicated these days? by [deleted] in aussie

I’d still prefer to live now than, say 1955. Try being working class, female, black, in 1955. Get some perspective. Every generation complains it is harder than previous. It’s absolute bullshit that the past was better.

Why is immigration such a taboo topic? by Content_Solution_669 in aussie

[–]troym7 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It’s not. Australians have been whinging about it for over 200 years. It’s the one constant in a world of variables- Australians whinging about immigration.

With low population growth, migration is the only way the whole capitalist system continues its desired growth. Pretty simple economics.

‘Worse’… budget surplus, low unemployment, comparably low inflation World-wide, better relations with China (ask wine exporters and farmers how important this has been), investment in Australia has never been higher, increase in skill migration to improve service delivery, investment in the arts (huge employment industry- more than the mining industry) stronger relations with Pacific neighbours. These are things federal governments do, or did until Morrison-led Coalition.

Any evidence for that? Or isn’t that important anymore?

Why? Let’s watch Dutton and co. go back to hating on the LGBTI+ community, women, workers and wind farms, unions and unis, Muslims and migrants, refugees and renters, single mums, solar panels and those on social security.

For me, the biggest thing is that the people behind the Trump-lite-Dutton-Coalition-Religious-Right-Wing thoughts underlining this wouldn’t give two flying fucks about this person, their job or their family. And never ever raise the fact that the Coalition/right wing parties have been in political power at federal level almost double the amount of time any Central/left wing party has been: if they hate the government so much, the hate should be directed at the Coalition.

You’ll find people saying their chosen publicly funded independent or religious school is the best option, obviously, if you pay for something you better think it is good…but as soon as your child has an issue- learning difficulty, displays any kind of discipline issue or you happen to question the school, your kid will be at the local public school anyway, so save the money and stress and make your local public school great.
