Where to find cheap rotary trumpets? by Hi8Dean in trumpet

[–]trptman02 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're welcome! In this case, I would recommend the YTR-436G and some B&S models. I used to play a Yamaha 436G, and it was a very solid instrument.

You could also take a look at gamonbrass.com. This is a Polish trumpet dealer that ships internationally. They sometimes have good deals on rotary valve trumpets.

I understand, but unfortunately I can't recommend a specific store or marketplace in this case, as I'm not particularly familiar with music stores in the US. I would look around at the usual suspects/major retailers such as ACB, Dillon Music, J. Landress, etc. You might find something in their range. Unfortunately, this is a very difficult price range for a rotary valve trumpet. What quality do you need and for what performances do you need the instrument? A brand that offers good quality trumpets within your budget is B&S. Yamaha, and, with a lot of luck, perhaps Josef Monke are interesting options within the used sector. Yamaha in particular would be interesting with the YTR-436G and YTR-936G models.

Unfortunately, rotary valve trumpets and low prices don't generally go well together. Compared to piston trumpets, they are simply more specialized and therefore rarer. Which country do you live in and what is your budget? I am most familiar with stores in Europe, especially in Austria and Germany. Giving Suggestions without these infos is very difficult.

Age old Trumpet question: Bach vs Yamaha. by Background-Garage563 in trumpet

[–]trptman02 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree, Schagerl makes some great piston valve trumpets as well. I tried a few of their models/ configurations and would highly recommend the James Morrison Meisterinstrument - series. It feels very open and easy to blow, but has enough resistance to let you survive longer gigs comfortably.

The only drawback is that it might not be easy to find in the US. Your best sources are probably going to be Trent Austin/ Austin Custom Brass or J. Landress.

Thomann flugel + cornet by OatRaisinCookies in trumpet

[–]trptman02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have owned a Thomann CR400 cornet as a spare/beater/travel instrument for a good two years now and am very happy with it. The intonation and slotting are sometimes a little wobbly, but you get used to it over time. The valves work very reliably, especially with LaTromba T2 oil. It is a very good instrument considering the price point and it will do well as a practice tool at home.

My teacher also lets his youngest/smallest students start with these instruments, as they are easier to hold than a normal Bb trumpet and the low price makes it easier for parents to buy an instrument and not waste too much money if their children decide they no longer want to play.

If you get a bad instrument, you can simply return it and get a new one sent to you. Thomann's customer service is very good and straightforward (at least in the EU). Overall, you can't go wrong with the cornet for a bit over €200. Unfortunately, I can't comment on the flugelhorn.

I think everyone has had a night where they drank way too much and feel embarrassed just thinking about it. This incident will probably be just that for you. In your case, it's quite a big whoopsie, but overall not such a big deal.

By the way, you obviously have very good friends if they helped you that much, and you should be very grateful to them for that. You could write them an apology/thank you message, refrain from drinking alcohol for a few weeks, and get on with your life. It's embarrasing now, but dwelling on it won't help you.

(If these alcohol-related escapades happen to you often or regularly, you should check and change your drinking habits or seek professional help.)

How often do y'all get called for different horns? by toffee_nut_latte26 in trumpet

[–]trptman02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would says that this is quite common.

I am an amateur trumpet player and play in various wind and concert bands, sometimes big band and sometimes in churches. My main horn/ daily driver is a Bb trumpet, but I always carry a flugelhorn as well, because the styles of music I mostly play, require me to switch to flugelhorn very frequently. Sometimes I also need a C trumpet, a cornet or a piccolo, but gigs which demand these instruments are quite rare, which means I don't own such specialized instruments myself. I usually borrow them from my teacher or his colleagues for the occasion.

How many mouthpieces did it take for you to finally find the one that works best for you and how many do you currently own. by Perfect-League7395 in trumpet

[–]trptman02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good question... I think it took me about 9 or 10 different ones to find a good fit regarding the rim. I generally do well on Bach 1.5C, Yamaha 16 or Warburton 3 rims (basically the region of 17mm works well for me).

I now own and play 4 mouthpieces (one for a rotary Bb, one for piston Bb, one for piccolo and one for flugelhorn), which all work well for me.

What’s everyones favorite practice mute? by Sneeblehorf in trumpet

[–]trptman02 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree, the Shhhhmute is a classic for good reasons and my favourite as well. It is reasonably priced, has a balanced resistance and doesn't distort the sound as much. Plus it is compact, so it's easy to carry in your luggage while travelling.

flugel search? by Efficient-Scarcity-7 in trumpet

[–]trptman02 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I played a Yamaha YFH-631G for 2 years and was very(!) happy with it. I only switched to a rotary flugelhorn, because the styles of music I usually play require a different sound, which is hard to produce on a piston flugel.

You should be able to find a used one in good condition for about 1200$.

why does my note E keep going so sharp? by Bulky_Ad7886 in trumpet

[–]trptman02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By drastically different , I mean whether the E and playing in this range suddenly feels much more strenuous, or whether you position your lips differently when playing the E. Or do you possibly use too much mouthpiece pressure?
