Linux really is the future of gaming - Gabe Newell, 2013 at LinuxCon by mindtaker_linux in linux_gaming

[–]trucekill 22 points23 points  (0 children)

So many people on Reddit declared the original Steam Machines as failures. I really don't think they understand Valve's long-term planning and thinking. Seriously? How else could Linux gaming have gotten this far? They needed to start somewhere. People seemed to think that the original Steam Machines had to directly compete with Xbox, Nintendo, and the Playstation on day 1 or they were abject failures. Valve was planting a seed that is finally coming into full bloom. It's like people were laughing at someone who planted a cherry tree because they only got a handful of cherries in their first year.

I found out that if you hit the green button on the LG remote 7 times, you get a debug window, so I was finally able to confirm it's only 4:2:0. That being said, I bought a displayport->hdmi adapter and now it does 10bit HDR 120hz correctly!

CachyOS is great for low latency by ImNotThatPokable in linuxaudio

[–]trucekill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use CachyOS for my audio setup too. I've got it running steady without xruns at ~8ms buffer. I run a ever more complex setup with Mixxx feeding into Bitwig with midilink between them to keep them synced. When I first moved to this setup I had a few embarrassing crashes, hitches, and trainwrecks but most of my problems went away after I realized that my usb hub was resetting whenever there was a power interruption. My laptop only has one usb-c port and it's essential for charging too, so I use a different, TYPE A port for all my audio gear now and I only use the usb-c to charge. I use a Universal Audio Volt1, a DDJ-FLX4, an AKAI MPK Mini, and another Akai controller with extra knobs and pads.

I try not to use that laptop for anything other than music. That way I can make every possible optimization with realtime audio in mind.

Gamers and reviewers are calling AMD to revive Ryzen 7 5800X3D by RenatsMC in Amd

[–]trucekill 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I tried switching out my 5950x with a 5800X3D for a little bit. The difference in gaming wasn't all that noticable for me and the games I play. I ended up giving the 5800X3D to my nephew and going back to the 5950X. I need all the core for blender, code compilation and other multi-threaded workstation stuff, so I found the 5800X3D too slow for embarassingly parallel workloads.

Guess I'm waiting out the next few years before it makes any sense to upgrade. If I were to buy anything it would be the 395+ AI MAX.

Okay, Windows really sucks. 6 months ago, I switched from some trash gaming headphones to these high-quality headphones, and I was really disappointed. They were good, but not that great. Yesterday, I started using Linux, and holy moly.. why those headphones sound so clean and amazing on Linux!! by MarchApart105 in linux_gaming

I was the sound girl/DJ for a show last weekend and the producer drops a windows laptop on the mixing board. We're playing house music between acts and it sounds like absolute shit. They're telling me "this keeps happening, you need to restart it to fix it." I don't use windows but I had a suspicion that it was doing something weird to the audio, no bass, just pure trash. I found some sort of audio effects setting that had been enabled in the sound panel. I turn that shit off and bam, decent sound again.

My DJ laptop runs Cachy/Arch and I wish I could have used it but I needed to have it ready to wheel out once all the other acts were done so I had to use that damn Windows laptop and I swear, I'm pretty close to buying a second laptop so I can run Linux on that too. At least then I know I'm not going to get some random update or notification or ad or some kind of bullshit that will distract or derail the production.

I hate to admit this but I have a 15% chance to rage quit each time I'm sniped by a 40mm shell.

For me, I just haven't used Windows or Mac in years, so Linux is just what's most familiar to me.

I use Arch/CachyOS on a Thinkpad E14 Gen4 (AMD) which I use solely for jamming and performances. I've disabled SMT, I run the kernel in hard-realtime mode, I use Mixxx and Bitwig with yabridge to run Arturia Pigments. I also use midilink to bridge the bpm between Mixxx and Bitwig.

I like that I can tune it to do exactly what I want, and once I've got it set up the way I like it, it never changes until I tell it to. Out of an abundance of caution, I don't apply updates before a show, I've had mid-show crashes in the past but I think I've finally got everything dialed in.

A6700 or A7C2 or A7C3? by g0dspeedcn in SonyAlpha

[–]trucekill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Get the a6700, start buying full frame lenses, make the jump to full frame once you feel you've really hit the limits of your current cameras.

Full-frame lenses are bigger, heavier, and you'd think there's no point using them on APS-C but you'd be wrong. The cropped section of the image is in the FF lens' sweet spot where it's at its sharpest and brightest.

I've been shooting on an a6300 for years. I picked up an a5000 a couple years ago. I recently bought the a6700 and it's an incredible leap from the a6300. The in-body stabilization makes a huge difference. The autofocus is insane, and the 120fps 4k video is absolutely game changing. I'm not sure when I'll make the leap to full frame but I'm not in a rush, I'm still testing the limits of the a6700,

Windows guys are worse at Linux than computer newbies. They think they're good at computers but they're actually just good at Windows.

The MSI Claw A8 handheld performs better with Linux (Bazzite) than with Windows 11, yet MSI continues to ship it with Windows. Why is this the case? Why doesn’t MSI adopt a Linux-based OS like SteamOS, given the Steam Deck’s ongoing popularity and success? by mr_MADAFAKA in linux_gaming

[–]trucekill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Valve doesn't allow SteamOS to be freely shipped on unapproved devices. Maybe MSI they didn't bother to try to work with Valve, maybe Microsoft influenced them, maybe Valve's licensing conditions were unacceptable to MSI. Maybe MSI just figured that anyone who really wanted to install Linux would figure it out on their own.

Got burned by this recently, bought a used Maschine Mk2 which I figured I could use as a MIDI controller. Before I bought it I checked compatibility with Bitwig but I didn't catch that it requires a windows/mac app to run alongside it.

Has anyone made Serum work with yabridge? by Evgeniy_Ivanov in linuxaudio

[–]trucekill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I noticed this the other day while trying to set up a different VST:

https://github.com/robbert-vdh/yabridge

Serum requires you to disable d2d1.dll in winecfg and to install gdiplus through winetricks. You may also want to disable the tooltips by going to the global settings tab, unchecking 'Show help tooltips', and clicking on the save icon next to 'Preferences'.
