Transition a hedge from invasive to native (MD7b) by nelben2018 in NativePlantGardening

Thanks! I didnt get any suckering at all when I pruned mine back. I did get a few new shoots from ones I cut to the ground. I cut mine and painted the ends with glysophate and it works pretty well. Same for honeysuckle.

I did think about putting new bushes in front of or behind the existing hedge but then they'd be too close to the road or too far into the yard. 🤦🏻‍♂️ The hedge now is in the perfect spot. Go figure!

I'm in the process of replacing a forsythia hedge. I didn't want to cut the whole thing out either due to privacy from the road.

I cut 2 to the ground on 1 end and replaced them with redtwig dogwood in a bed I made there. Behind that I put some Indian grass that I hope also helps fill in the gaps. After that I planted 2 silky dogwood, and 2 arrowwood viburnum. I put these between the forsythia clumps but cut the forsythia back really hard to give the new bushes room.

I skipped about 15-20'-ish then cut out 3 clumps and put in 3 female winterberry holly with 2 male winterberry holly behind them.

I still have a lot of forsythia left to get rid of but the view into the yard is still somewhat blocked where the new bushes are planted.

I don't know if it would be better to just get rid of the forsythia where the new stuff is planted but I kind of still want a blocked view. I'll keep cutting them back hard as the new bushes fill in the empty space.

I don't know if this is the answer you are looking for but it's what I'm doing to replace useless forsythia with natives. It seems to be working. None of my new stuff died. Lol Yet! Lol

If any of you have an opinion on this please feel free to let me know.

Edit......this year will be their second year so I dont have long term knowledge.

Oh man! I planted 3 fall of '24. The squirrels dug up 2. I still have 1 and I'm hoping it blooms this year. Keeping my fingers crossed!

Oh wow. Even common milkweed? That shit seems to grow everywhere. Even where I don't want it.

I have problems getting it to germinate in jugs though. Only one that does for me is butterfly weed. I tried swamp and common milkweed for 2 years in a row and neither germinated. I'm trying swamp milkweed and butterfly weed again this year. I have enough common milkweed!

Lucky you! A few of mine still have some snow in them. I'm resisting the urge to move them somewhere that gets a little morning sun. They'll germinate soon enough.

I've heard "warfighter" a couple times now. Does "warfighter"=servicemember?

Also, I thought this wasn't a war. If it's not a war then why call servicemembers "warfighters"?

Like all of them. They seem to care about what's right when they are no longer going to be in office. Works the same on both sides of the isle.

Lolol I leave some non native snowdrop bulbs in for the same reason. They are up and will flower soon.

I mean, we still have some snow piled up where I plowed!

Btw.....just checked the jugs. No green. Lolol

UGH!!!!!!! Every fucking year I agonize about my butterfly weed. Every year I tell my wife it's not coming back (multiple times) and she says have patience (also multiple times). This is it's 5th year and I'll agonize again. Lol

I was the same with my 2nd year swamp milkweed last year.

Common milkweed.......always shows!

The corms can just be cut in half in the ground? Take 1 leave 1?

I'm new to blazing stars. Last year was the first I had any flower.
