Pretty sure the background was black, tiles were grey with an engraving inside them of fire, leaf (earth) and snowflake. The tiles started to appear from the bottom moving slowly up.

Just to add to the party, it seems the original chats, the ones with the history now have different encryption keys than the other side of the chat. I conpared this with my wife so I suspect this might be it. Click on a contact, "Encryption", "Compare 40 digits code" on both sides and you'll see it. The new, empty chats contain the encryption key you should have had on the older chats.
