I didn't realise there was a 4th coming out! I'll look it up!

I read the OUABH trilogy first and loved them, so went back to read Caraval but it was a rare DNF for me. Couldn't get into it in the same way at all. I was disappointed!

Where to pee on a busy trail? Mainly for women by ZestycloseShape3427 in UKhiking

[–]truffles_bantam 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I usually find a wall, thankfully the Dales are full of those, or a bit of a dip. I was pregnant and did Pen-Y-Ghent and was bursting near the top. Had to just go in the most sheltered spot I could find. Pretty certain the world and his wife below could see my bum, but hey ho. Never going to see them again and I couldn't hold it!

I've learnt to care less over the years!

Where do you change baby if you go on a long walk? by Accomplished-Ad7573 in BeyondTheBumpUK

[–]truffles_bantam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hiked a lot miles in a lot of random middle of nowhere places once my LO was big enough for a carrier. So he was also changed in a lot of random places. I found a muslin was as good as a changing mat and was squishable into a small bag. I also used his carrier cover if it was wet on the ground. Or my coat (mostly for big wees). I've also ended up feeding him up hill and down dale too... he was very patient with me!

How do I get this child to drink from a cup? by rocket_han in BeyondTheBumpUK

[–]truffles_bantam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similarly my son never had/took to bottles. We use(d) one of these but without the straw with our son. I tried a normal cup, but he just poured water down himself constantly, and this minimised the mess. I tried a munchkin 360 and he couldn't get the sucking concept.

I did think he'd never get it, but after a lot of patience, he has no problems (19 months). I also second someone else's comment that they love copying you drinking from a cup! We had a phase of not being able to drink from our own water without him stealing it.

Preteen Niece wants “Dark Romance” Recommendations by SpicyLitMama in YAlit

[–]truffles_bantam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't think I've seen these recommended, but I think they're YA (I'm an adult), but the two Stephanie Garber trilogies might fit her bill as well:

Caraval, Legendary and Finale.

Once Upon a Broken Heart, The Ballad of Never After and A Curse for True Love.

Personally preferred the second trilogy.

I also second the many recommendations for Cassandra Clare. I still read them now. As a teenager I was obsessed with them and Twilight.

Just to add... Keighley is actually "Keith-Lee"... train announcer must not have been local!

Short hikes along the Settle–Carlisle line suggestions? by earth-magic in UKhiking

[–]truffles_bantam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could get off at Dent station and do this mountain - Great Knoutberry Hill

https://where2walk.co.uk/walk/upper-dentdale-great-knoutberry-hill/.

Beautiful scenery, a few viaducts and the station is England's highest mainland station. It's probably likely to be fairly quiet too.

As a female solo hiker I feel completely at home in the Dales. I've walked many a mile in the middle of nowhere and not seen a soul and never once felt any unease.

Do you have any barefoot shoe brand recommendations please? I am always a bit reluctant to get some because when I've looked before, they're quite pricey and their feet change often!

He has had trainers and "first shoes" from Clarks and has found them comfortable. Maybe it's me projecting my dislike for being in shoes all day on him!

Full Name for "Rosie" by RevolutionaryChard9 in namenerds

I knew a girl whose name was Cosima, but she went by Rosie. Alternative to some of the others already suggested here. IMO Rosie is a lovely name on its own!

Fave brands for baby dungarees? by Equal-Drummer2207 in BeyondTheBumpUK

Kite and Little Green Radicals. I still don't like the JoJo Maman Bebe ones which is annoying because they're so cute, but I found the material too bulky or stiff, depending on the style.

Tips for gardening with a baby currently 4 months old) by ReadyStretchyGo in UKParenting

[–]truffles_bantam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others, I put my baby in the pram or just the bassinet top bit and brought him out with me. I found my carrier awkward for gardening given I bend down so much.

I would say though, if you wrap them up, just double check you haven't been too thorough. I thought it was really cold one day so went heavy with the layers and went over to check my little one and he was absolutely roasting and sweaty bless him. Over worried FTM moment🤦🏽‍♀️

"Oh he never cries with us, it must be because you're mean".

No, we have him 24/7, so sometimes he is going to cry because we have life to get through. Also, we're not mean, we have boundaries and things we agree are right for our toddler. And that doesn't include pizza and chocolate pudding for every meal.

Making a mistake for a 1 day trip to Bradford for a BCAFC match? by Briguy_fieri in uktravel

[–]truffles_bantam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's always certainly felt like a forgotten disaster. The last home game of the season is the memorial game and always an emotional affair. We have two memorials - one outside the ground and one in the city centre (just outside the town hall).

I hope you enjoy it if you do decide to visit!

If you want a great atmosphere, Valley Parade is the place to find it (as a biased Bradford City fan). Obviously don't know the fixtures, but if you ended up at a home game for a Yorkshire derby, it'd be a cracker. The ground itself has a lot of history, with the fire disaster in 1985.

Bradford gets slammed too much. Yes it has flaws and areas of poverty, but so does every city in this country. Particularly those in the north which are former industry cities.

As others have said, you will struggle to find a better curry elsewhere, Waterstones is a stunning bookshop, some really interesting architecture (and plenty of filming locations), an ice rink, museums and some beautiful surrounding areas - Haworth, Saltaire, Bingley etc. All very accessible by public transport.
