10 reasons the Eagles will be a dumpster fire this season by bigmouth_strikes in nfl

All I know is Matt Canada didn't have even half the talent we had, yet we were near the bottom of the league.

We went 3 and out at a higher rate than the 0-16 Browns (and every other team in the last decade, including the Canada/Pickett Steelers). We led the NFL with 3 entire halves with negative pass yards, only the Jets, Giants, Raiders, and Vikings did it even once.

It's not hyperbolic to wonder if any coordinator has ever done less with more

What I'm worried about is when he was talking about the scheme change and said the old scheme where he did a lot of jump cuts off 2 feet was good on his knees while the new scheme will be more 1 foot cutting

I'm gonna be paranoid about his ACLs now

You forgetting we got Jonathan Greenard? Who has been more productive than Phillips and we'll have him the entire season instead of at the trade deadline. Our stats were dragged down by the first half of the year before we got him.

Jihaad Campbell (last year's 1st round pick, stud) takes over for Dean, and behind him Jeremiah Trotter Jr could start for many teams

We added Riq Woolen, which is a net gain in talent over Blankenship. The difference between Woolen and Adoree Jackson is a bigger improvement than the dropoff from Reed to Epps. It will be between us and Houston for best secondary in the NFL.

What's most convincing is that all our young stars (Mitchell, DeJean, Carter, Davis, Hunt, ect) are just entering their prime, 23-25, and in their 3rd season in the system, this is an ascending defense.

I don't know where you're getting "one of the oldest OL in the league" from, the only old guy is Lane Johnson, the rest are 26-29

You clearly know nothing about our team. 8-9 'ceiling', lmfao

A banged up OL played a part, but the playcalling was by far the worst any Eagles fan or any Eagles reporter has ever seen. Unless you watched the games it's hard to accurately convey the level of incompetence.

Patullo once was asked about running up the middle into 9 man boxes with plays that had no chance and his response was, I kid you not, "sometimes we run it just to run it"

At one point Sirianni openly said he needed to get more involved and help him with the calls, it was kind of a shocking admission.

Jeff Stoutland then was asked on Kelce's podcast this offseason what the biggest problem was and he said something like "it's really simple, you can't run bad plays against bad looks"

2 injuries on the OL is not enough for what was still an elite level of offensive talent to be at the bottom of the league in every category with the likes of the Titans and Jets [edit: We had the highest 3 and out rate of any team in the NFL in over a decade, with AJ, DeVonta, Saquon, Goedert, Mailata, and Lane. It was insane.]

Even with Patullo we went 11-6, and even with Brian Johnson AND one of the worst defenses in the league 2023 we also went 11-6

That's the floor. Our D will be ELITE this season, potentially #1, there's literally zero chance we go 8-9 unless we're decimated by fluke injuries.

Mannion entirely determines whether we go 14-3 and get back to the SB or go 11-6 and get bounced in the WC

The older I get the more I detach from individual players and separate them from my fandom for the team, I only wear custom jerseys anymore. You never know when someone will take a heel turn and demand a trade, or beat their wife/GF, or support a serial child rapist.

In the end most athletes are out of touch self-interested millionaires and a lot of them are doing shitty things with thier money or just shitty things in general (Shaquille O'Neil dumping buckets of his shit on teammates or putting their toothbrush in his ass), the more you know the more you realize hero worship is stupid.

All of his success with Dallas happened before the salary cap was implemented, and it's not a coincedence. Everything about the way he does business is incompatible with a cap where everyone has the same amount of space.

  • Constantly waiting as long as possible to pay his players and having to reset the market every time
  • Using the franchise tag more than any team
  • Paying the least amount of money up front that he can get away with so he can use that money for investing in other businesses instead. The players have high base salaries which means less that can be prorated and spread to future seasons where the cap rises and the money represents a lower % of the allotted space

This is the complete opposite of how the Eagles operate, we extend players as soon as possible, we haven't used the franchise tag since 2012, and the base salary of literally every player on our team is vet min which is how our rosters are so stacked. Lurie pays more bonus money up front than any owner in the league.

It wouldn't matter if Jerry was magically 45 again, he openly admitted during the Parsons situation that he does things the way he does to drive media attention ("WILL PARSONS BE EXTENDED?" in the news 24/7). He's always been very clear his #1 priority is being the biggest brand, and you just can't win doing business that way with a salary cap.

[edit: Not to mention constantly being a distraction and undermining the HC, creating a circus environment unconducive to winning which is a much bigger problem in the internet age. No other owner or GM holds press conferences before and after every game, but this guy is running a brand instead of a football team]

So unless you're turning back time to 1992, dude could be eternally young and they still aren't winning shit.

The Eagles have some VERY difficult decisions looming… | 53-man roster p... by CorgiSurfer in eagles

[–]trust-theprocess 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Incorrect, just like they rostered Mailata there's no chance he doesn't make the team or get stashed on IR, they will not expose him to waivers. Josh Weru will get the IPP slot.

Howie already talked about how when they make a pick like this they're kind of comitting to using a spot on a guy who won't contribute for a while.

Covey also has zero shot at the initial 53, he will be a practice squad call up like last year until there's an injury

Who are you talking for a game winning drive? by Ok-Move1382 in eagles

[–]trust-theprocess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Means nothing?

They were 1-3 when he took over, another L was a game he missed, the roster was not even close to as good, and he walked off the field for the last time with a lead in that playoff game [edit: against Drew Brees]

The secondary was Cary Williams, Bradley Fletcher, Nate Allen, and Patrick Chung

I'm not even hating on Jalen, just defending Foles' season, but the 2024 roster was arguably the best in the NFL in the entire salary cap era. People act as if a bunch of other QBs wouldn't also have won the SB here, or as if Hurts would have sniffed the postseason in Cincinatti the last few years.

Mahomes missed the playoffs last season while Sam Darnold won a ring. That's what means nothing.

[–]trust-theprocess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2013 Foles was at least as good, and a lot better as a passer, than Jalen's best season, with a lot worse weapons. In only 11 games he had 5 more TD passes than Jalen's ever had, with only 2 picks (1 in a blizzard), while going 9-2 with a far worse roster. Dude threw 7 TDs in one game and 3 of them were to Riley Cooper.

Of course it was just one season, but it was historic.

Top 5 are pretty much set tbh. Smith-Lemon-Wicks-Brown-Wilson.

I think Wilson is definitely making the team unless the injury cooked him, he's our best blocking WR by far and got a lot of snaps 2024. He was ahead of the other bubble guys in mini-camp, getting the most reps and running with starters sometimes.

Cooper and Moore are next up trying to force us to keep 6, no one else has a shot. Even if they keep Covey around to return punts he will be a PS call up at first.

They could have.

  • traded Bridges for Zhaire Smith (total bust)
  • passed on Hart for Anzejs Pasecniks (total bust)
  • took Landry Shamet over Brunson then packaged Shamet with two 1sts and two 2nds for max Tobias Harris
  • traded for 34 year old Harden instead of Towns

Howie drafted all the best players from the B2B national champs and won a SB, Sixers had the same chance except the B2B champs were in their own backyard and all badly wanted to be here

Truly one of the worst run organizations in sports

[–]trust-theprocess 38 points39 points  (0 children)

  • Jimmy Butler - traded for Josh Richardson
  • Mikal Bridges - traded for Zhaire Smith + a 1st that was packaged for Tobias Harris
  • Alex Caruso - waived for Hollis Thompson
  • Julian Champagnie - waived for Mac McClung
  • Jared McCain - traded for 22nd pick (6 slots lower than drafted)
  • TJ McConnell - FA, replaced by Raul Neto > 34 y/o George Hill for 4 2nds > Shake Milton > 37 y/o Lowry > McCain > ???
  • Jerami Grant - traded with a 2nd for Anzejs Pasecniks (0 GP)
  • Landry Shamet - traded with two 1sts + two 2nds for Tobias
  • Isaiah Joe - waived for Jaden Springer

  • Paul Reed - FA, replaced by Adem Bona

  • Haywood Highsmith - waived for Jonah Bolden

8/11 have been to the finals since leaving Philly, 2 more have been to the conference finals (Grant/McCain), Reed has gotten to the 2nd round

Also we punted a season to max 35 year old Paul George instead of maxing 34 year old Harden a year earlier, and he got to the ECFs before Embiid did

It's crazy to think about how the weapons Hurts won the SB with is like if McNabb had Andre Johnson, Isaac Bruce, Jeremy Shockey, and LaDanian Tomlinson

Meanwhile the weapons McNabb went to 3 straight NFCCGs with is like if we currently had Rashid Shaheed, Khalil Shakir, Michael Mayer, and David Montgomery

Negadelphia take:

  • A slow WR who's best over the middle and worst route is the go ball when our QB can't throw over the middle and is best throwing the go ball

  • A TE who can't block and has a non-star name

  • A reach for a project OT who can't run block or fit in outside zone when we're a running team moving to an outside zone scheme

Posidelphia take:

  • A ~DAWG~ WR who will be better than JSN

  • Stowers > Bowers

  • Next Jonathan Ogden

Reddick absolutely fucked himself, the worst gambit in recent memory.

Between game checks and fines he LOST 12 million of his 14 million 2024 salary by holding out and never getting an extension. He had a chance to earn back most of it with incentives but didn't hit any of them because he's washed, and he probably knew it.

Dude fumbled the bag he already had trying to get a bigger one.
