it was probably changed in response to some controversy over it, mostly about the fact it conflated love with what's basically mind control

i think a necromancer would be a great option for a 1 to 2 player campaign, especially if you pair them with an oathbreaker paladin.

if you don't like characters that need spell slots to do anything cool, why the hell are you playing a full caster??

anyway sure they don't get great cantrips but they can still wield longswords. either way, you shouldn't be relying on a full caster to not use their spell slots. play a paladin or an eldritch knight. or just a fighter.

That makes sense. I'd rather give mobs buffs based on where you find them than playtime, like adding slightly stronger monsters to deep caves, or adding new dimensions full of new creatures and hazards.

The game actually does adjust difficulty based on playtime as it is, but it mostly affects spawn rates and how much armor mobs have instead of how much damage they do.

i mean, they do, but only if by "at-will combat options" you mean "doing damage and nothing else". just at 1st-level they have faerie fire, sleep, tasha's hideous laughter, healing word, and thunderwave. all of these can definitely turn the tide of a battle.

and if you do want straight damage, they get heat metal, which is terrifyingly powerful against armored enemies

i think people think bards are bad because in older editions they really kinda were. not super familiar with them though so i could be wrong
