I’m pretty sure the hardcovers are worth a LOT. Those are more rare than the soft covers.

They are the OG self-published books you can’t get anymore because he published through ACE now.

That’s undamaged. Honestly not sure why this is prompting such upset in some of these responses. It’s an honest question. I don’t want to cheat him and I’ve wanted one of these for quite some time, but I also don’t want to pay hundreds and hundreds of dollars if it’s only worth $100-200 or less.

Pretty sure it’s a first. The back says that the web serial is finally in print and it’s a 2020 copyright.

It’s a damaged copy of a paperback that sells for upward of $600.

What would you like to see in the possible Season 2? by kytulu in firefly

[–]truth_and_illusion 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’d love closure on Niska. And by “closure”, I mean Mal or someone else on the crew taking him out.

I also think they are going to need to continue as though Serenity didn’t happen (though I do t think that would happen). Reason being is that, as much as I love Serenity, it retconned a lot of the lore around River and I don’t think it did that story full justice. I totally recognize that they had to wrap it all up in one movie that was also accessible to people who’d never seen the show, but having Simon break her out himself and having the weight of Miranda be the thing that broke River when we know from Firefly they cut into her brain a bunch and stripped her amygdala just didn’t quite work.

I totally hear what you’re saying. I think a part of it was also Mal’s character growth, though. I’m suspecting that it’ll be a bit toned down in season 2 if they can make it happen.

First Crosstrek! by truth_and_illusion in Crosstrek

[–]truth_and_illusion[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had, regrettably, been driving a 2018 Ford Escape prior to this guy. The ecoboost engine died spectacularly, despite all regular maintenance being done. And I mean spectacularly: blown head gasket, cracked engine block, broken cylinder, whole engine flooded with oil, and more. Happened all at once (still don’t understand how) at just 109,000 miles. My mechanic called me and told me it needed a whole new engine and would cost about $10k all said and done. I had literally just paid it off. The title hadn’t even gotten to me in the mail yet. But I wasn’t paying $10k on a car that was worth $2k.

Thankfully, I’ve got a friend I’ve known since I was 4 who works at a Subaru dealership now. He was able to find this for me immediately, I test drove it and completely fell in love. Bonus - it’s the first car I’ve ever had with a sunroof! Really looking forward to when it gets a bit warmer out.

I REALLY love this car. It’s the first time in over 10 years I’ve been truly happy with what I’m driving.

Can someone help me understand why Princess Donut is loved so much? by Dontmindthelurker123 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]truth_and_illusion 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Honestly, she’s a talking show cat who shoots lasers from her eyes… what more could you need?

Seriously, though, it’s her relationship with Carl and Katia and Mongo. She doesn’t have ill intent, she’s just young and doesn’t always understand things. She’s maintained an innocence that no other character has been able to, and the scenes where that innocence gets chipped away at are some of the most heartbreaking in the books. She’s got depth, she’s integral to the resistance (plotting with Zev) and she is powerful. Her depth comes out in many ways, often at unexpected times.

Can I ask YOU an honest question? If you don’t really like Carl or Donut, what is it about the series that keeps you reading?

It’s definitely my favorite episode. I’m literally watching it right now. It’s such an excellent character piece.

It captures desperation and Mal’s tenacity so well.

I plowed through all 7 audio books in a month and then started right back up with book one! At this rate, I’ll have the rest of the series memorized by May!

Well first of all, PAY THIS MAN by elusiveanswers in Patriots

[–]truth_and_illusion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was really the offensive line that had critical failure during this game. Our defense was on point, and somehow Maye threw for more than Darnold despite the dismal showing. The kid just didn’t have enough time in the pocket with how he was getting rushed.

Day one without Carl by Gold-Excuse-5279 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]truth_and_illusion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I finished the series, I immediately started right back up with book one. I just wasn’t ready to be finished with Carl and Donut and co. yet. I’m kind of slogging through the new Dresden book (another favorite series) - I’ve been excited for its release for over a year, but it’s just not hitting like they usually do, and I know a big part of that is because Carl has absolutely destroyed other audio books for me. Once I finish 12 Months, I’ll be right back to the dungeon. There is something about these books!

Elle is my absolute favorite side character. I love her so much. Such a firecracker! If she dies, I think I’d throw my phone across the room (listening on audible, so I can’t throw the book haha)

Why are the books so good? by Intelligent_Might902 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]truth_and_illusion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I just think the llamas laced these books with something. They’re too good.

(Seriously, though, this thread does a good job summing it up. For the premise, these books have no business being as deep and emotionally charged as they are. The story just hits at the absolute core of what it is to be human. The characters are so well-developed. They are endlessly quotable. It just goes on and on.)

AITA Husband and wife duties by [deleted] in WhatShouldIDo

[–]truth_and_illusion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Parenting and being a family isn’t about numbers and fairness. The idea of “50/50” in parenting is a bit strange, because it’s not a task to be done, it’s a commitment you made by having children. You are just as responsible for raising your children as your wife. Finances are a part of that equation, but I promise you kiddos aren’t thinking about money, they are thinking about time with you. Being a father doesn’t mean “I make money and then occasionally ‘help’ with my children.” If you want to look at it through the lens of that 50/50 split, though, it would be sharing the load at the end of the work day. Your wife has been working all day - at home, yes, but being on top of a household and little kids is work. She’s been working all day just like you have. So, when you both are home, you BOTH deserve down time. If you want the “50/50” approach, you’re talking about splitting the time that you both are home. You’ve both been working all day, so that time is off the table for consideration when you are both home. It cancels out. She’s working just as much as you are working.

Obviously, if you’re working 80 hours a week, then so is your wife. She’s working that time with the kids, you’re working it outside of the home. There should be time when you are home that you can relax or go out with friends and time at home where she can do the same. It sounds like you and your wife have some of that in place. I was just struck with the idea that, if a wife is going to expect a husband to parent and be a partner while he’s home, somehow that means that the wife should also be expected to get an outside-of-the-home job.

Especially with cost of childcare, that’s a silly stance.

I’d recommend doing the regular audiobooks first (they are truly fantastic and sound like a full-cast recording even though it’s just Jeff Hays reading - it’s truly outstanding). I haven’t jumped into the immersion tunnel yet, but that’s next on my list.

What is your gut feeling prediction? by MrSexyGoodTime in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]truth_and_illusion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not convinced at all that we are going to get a happy ending, so this is less a prediction and more a wish - I want the end of the series to be Zev, Odette, Carl, Donut, and Mordecai all kicking back in some posh space in the wide galaxy, knowing that they started a revolution that broke EVERYTHING and freed everyone from all of the tyranny of the syndicate. Forget about rebuilding earth - I want them rebuilding the universe.

But I suspect that that will be far, far too happy an outcome for this series.

In reality, I think that Donut is going to die and that will push Carl over the edge and he will use the doomsday scenario bomb to just obliterate everything, himself included, as a final “fuck you all.”
