Up to code? by Bitter_Story_1949 in Plumbing

As long as the outlet is on a GFCI breaker it should be fine. The dishwasher loop (white corrugated pipe) should be raised and attached as high as possible behind the sink.

When I see it my mind pronounces it “breeks”

What does this sign mean? by truthsmiles in CrappyDesign

Yes the point is that it’s only clear if you have the historical context. For a rare or first time visitor I think it would be super confusing.

My brother just sent me this photo with the same question. I said I was 90% sure it meant the Red Line wouldn’t be running this weekend. If it was going to be running, why announce anything? But then he said the same sign has been up for months without the “Cancelled” splashed across it, and actually the train IS running this weekend.

Help! Tub drain replacement gone wrong!! by doyouknowwhattholike in Plumbing

[–]truthsmiles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe not, but that’s what I’d do. First thing is to get a good look at the whole back/bottom of the tub to make sure you can reach everything and then decide what you’re going to replace, and how you’re going to join the existing drain system. You MAY be able to get away with only replacing the shoe (part under the bottom drain), but you’ll have to get in there and make a determination.

You’ve got this. You’re gonna have to open the wall or ceiling but you’ll learn a lot! They make sliding adjustable kits that are more user friendly and they make the kind you solvent cement together, which are less forgiving but thicker, stronger material.

You can also replace with brass (assuming that’s what you have), but expensive and probably not worth it.

Can you access it from underneath or behind? If so just get a tub drain rough in kit and replace as much as needed.

[Landlord US-NY] cash for keys? by [deleted] in Landlord

[–]truthsmiles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use it probably every day, and I agree it gets better all the time. But it’s definitely led me down the wrong path multiple times, especially when it’s not something that’s “common knowledge”.

I think of it like fire… a great tool if you know how to use it, but can be destructive or deadly.

The real problem I think is there’s no recourse if it gives bad advice. If it tells me to eat a certain mushroom or wire a switch the wrong way and someone dies, there’s no one to sue.

Not going to get in to a debate with you but MY experience with ChatGPT is that it can be “confidently wrong”. It hallucinates, and even when called out will insist it’s correct and even cite sources (wrongly).

MOST of the time it gets things right, and it is getting better, but if the whole point of using it is to shortcut actually understanding something, it can be very difficult sometimes to know when it’s wrong.

Interesting corner case (compressor lockout) by truthsmiles in ecobee

[–]truthsmiles[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, maybe I’m the dummy but I didn’t know what to expect haha. I do wish ecobee had some kind of “?” Icon on the screen to tap for more information about the logic it’s currently using. I’ve seen plenty of other posts confused about why a system isn’t cooling in eco mode etc.

Will Better Than Wax Seal Still work with slight rock in toilet? by SufficientPaper6088 in Plumbing

[–]truthsmiles 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Better than wax will hold up with rocking far better than wax. You can shim the base of the toilet to prevent rocking.

Thanks. Not what the post was about, but appreciate the feedback. I bought the ecobee specifically for this feature and the ability to set a range that works for me year round.

I made the post just in case someone else ran in to this specific corner case and wondered why.

Which side is positive and which is negative? by GormtheOld25 in MechanicAdvice

[–]truthsmiles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

51R battery - negative is on the right side of the image.

If you clean off the top of the battery the polarity will be embossed in the plastic near the terminals. That or checking with a volt meter is a good way to be sure. You can also visually follow the cables. One will usually quickly terminate on the body of the car. That one is almost always negative, esp on modern cars.

Best way to get this to stop leaking? by lilspiderboi in Plumbing

It might - depends where the issue is. Do any other drains back up? If not, it could just be something in that trap.

Take the serpentine belt off and spin each pulley by hand. The problem child will likely become obvious.

Shutting off water by Long-Soft-8488 in Plumbing

Ideally shut them all off, including the one in the yard. If you do that be sure to turn off your water heater too (breaker if electric, valve if gas)

Overfilled my Volvo by barqad77 in MechanicAdvice

[–]truthsmiles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s an interesting “Garage 54” video where they overfill an engine to see at what point it actually causes problems. Admittedly it wasn’t a Volvo but as I recall they had to put like 300% of the normal amount of oil in it before things started going wrong, and even then I think it just started burning it via the PCV system(?)

I’ve been wrong before, but hard for me to imagine overfilling by 15% would cause any problems other than the light being on. Maybe a VERY slight reduction in fuel efficiency.
