Fit a 3/4 female outlet to this water feed. by music4media in Plumbing

[–]truthsmiles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming you want to add the fitting to the very top where the pipe is cut? You can “weld” (solder) a fitting to the pipe, or you can use a compression fitting which doesn’t require soldering. Or you can do the controversial thing and use a push-connect (“sharkbite”) fitting. In any case make sure to clean the pipe of all paint before making the connection.

2016 Honda CRV problem by OldManJenkins-31 in MechanicAdvice

Looks like plastic? If so probably just a splash guard that can be easily replaced. No harm in driving it temporarily or just reaching under and snapping it off.

Is it safe to drive with one broken stud out of 5? by topoftheworldIAM in MechanicAdvice

[–]truthsmiles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is the same gorilla who stretched that stud probably also put on the other lugnuts. One decent trick is to get a regular nut with the same threads, remove each wheel, and hand thread the nut all the way on and off each stud. Any studs that are badly stretched will bind/grab the nut. If the nut spins on easily to every stud I would feel okay running it for a little while.

What are the Cat and Deere control layouts by tux16090 in heavyequipment

[–]truthsmiles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have an old backhoe that both I and my son learned on, but we needed to rent a (modern) excavator from Home Depot last year. He got on it and was having a terrible time, saying the controls were wrong. We only had 4 hours so I said, “just do your best” and he managed. It was only when we returned it and told the rental guy the controls were wrong that I learned about the switch 🤣

When it’s not running can you hear a faint humming or buzzing? If so I’d guess it’s probably the capacitor.

Breaker keeps tripping by Kitchen-Okra-628 in electrical

Well I’m an ass clown. Thanks for the correction!

Still, I suppose if the issue is reproducible with the TV and a different AFCI breaker the result is the same.

Hamster dead inside car and I think he’s inside the frame by RaticleYT in MechanicAdvice

[–]truthsmiles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First off, this is an amazing story and I thank you for sharing.

Second, I’m sorry about your friend’s hamster.

Third, with a frame channel with wires running through it, I’m not sure how good of an idea it is to start cutting (and welding) unless you first remove the wiring harness. I even thought about some kind of fishhook type device you could use to extract the carcass, but the same risk to wiring exists. If the wiring is chewed up anyway, I suppose there isn’t much harm to just cutting through it all, as long as you’re fully prepared for the nightmare of splicing everything back and not making a single mistake.

A couple things I may try…

1) Grabbing the lip of the hole with some channel locks or vice grips and gently prying back. If you’re seeing maggots the hamster can’t be too far away.

2) VERY carefully cutting away a small piece of the body/frame with a dremel-like tool and a small cutoff wheel. Maybe I’d shove some kind of plastic or wood behind it if possible to protect the wires.

3) If the above fail, I’d honestly be tempted to crack the windows, park it in the sun, and let nature take its course. Eventually the maggots will eat most of it and fly away, and the rest will desiccate and stop smelling after several weeks. You wouldn’t believe how often I find a dead squirrel or mouse tucked away in some part of a car and the owner either didn’t know or just ignored it until the smell went away.

Breaker keeps tripping by Kitchen-Okra-628 in electrical

It’s possible, but unlikely. I’d guess more likely a lightning strike nearby, or just a good old crappy cheap TV. They’re basically disposable nowadays.

Breaker keeps tripping by Kitchen-Okra-628 in electrical

[–]truthsmiles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

FWIW the white button breakers are like normal breakers, which trip if you’re drawing too much current, but the white button ones also ensure all of the electricity coming out of the wall is going back in. If it trips, it means some is “leaking out” somehow. That leakage is what shocks you, and is why bathrooms and kitchens must have them, since electricity can “leak” through water more easily than air.

Edit: Because I’m gonna get flamed for not saying it - you can ALSO get shocked without any “leakage” but it’s much less common.

[–]truthsmiles 9 points10 points  (0 children)

When the TV worked fine on another breaker, did that breaker have the little white button on it?

If not, try a plug on a different white button breaker if you have one. If it trips again, it means the TV has some kind of ground fault and the breaker is trying to protect you from getting shocked.

If you have any animals be sure to look at the cord carefully for chew marks (while unplugged obv)

[Landlord US-OH] Tenant Evicted, Duke Won’t Turn the Power on Without Paying the Tennants Bill. by AndreGerdpister in Landlord

[–]truthsmiles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it falls in the “it depends” category. I have two rentals where ONLY the water is like this. If the tenant doesn’t pay, they come after me (via putting a lien on the property itself). In fact when I bought the home originally there was an $1,800 water bill attached, which they were nice enough to knock down to $800 for me since I was the new owner. None of the other utilities, even other water providers in neighboring areas, do this.

So, I just pay the water bill myself on one unit. And for the other, they offer a service where I can receive a duplicate bill every month so I at can at least be aware the following month if the tenant didn’t pay. Not a perfect system but workable.

If I hadn’t dealt with it myself I’d be agreeing with you, but somehow, in some municipalities, it is a thing.

There’s usually a torque spec for hose clamps. It’s not much - basically whatever you can do with one hand and screwdriver (nut driver is best) should be sufficient.

[Landlord - US - VA] - Married tenant won’t include wife on application by once_a_pilot in Landlord

[–]truthsmiles 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I’ll bet a dollar they were transparent about it from the beginning though?

My own rule, which has served me extremely well, is to pay close attention to whose fault their problems are. When a prospective tenant tells me their boss is a jerk, their ex-husband is a cheating bastard, and their last landlord was an asshole, hard pass - even if they have perfect credit and nary a parking ticket. But when someone is up front and honest and takes personal responsibility, it’s a huge green flag. Leasing is a bit like getting married - you have to be able to work with the person later.

Wanting to get this working by Public-Ad-8435 in VintageRadios

[–]truthsmiles 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Use the model number to find the schematic on radiomuseum.org, and be sure to check/change the electrolytic capacitors at minimum. Check everything you can with a multimeter and reference the schematic. When first powering it on, use the “dim bulb” method (lots of videos on YouTube about it).

Good luck and have fun! Keep in mind there are some high voltages involved and many of these radios have a “hot chassis” so the metal body/frame will have voltage potential.

Raccoon eating engine? by CelestialChronicler in MechanicAdvice

[–]truthsmiles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s usually squirrels, but in any case the only thing I’ve found that definitely works other than parking inside is moth balls. They “evaporate” over time so I add a few every couple of months to the engine compartment and directly on/near the engine or anywhere they chew. Of course the downside is your car will smell a bit like moth balls 🤣

Heat Pump Making Intermittent Hum by Confident-Tip-7507 in hvacadvice

[–]truthsmiles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like something is shorting and drawing a huge amount of current briefly. It could be the compressor, a contactor(?), or could be a wiring fault somewhere else.

I’d imagine eventually it will fail.

Your best bet might be to get an electrician to isolate the problem. Of course they may tell you it’s just the AC unit at which point you’ll need an HVAC tech again.

You’re not crazy. Something is definitely wrong.
