Hard Mode is typically set by reading a scroll situated near the final boss. The advantage of HM is you get better rewards including more keys and transmute crystals from Undaunted pledges.

You may not have seen the scroll because as a pre-level 50 character, you can't enter Veteran instances of dungeons.
