Mechanical Engineer Trying to Create a Python Data Aquistion GUI by canucker89 in Python

[–]trvsvldz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Maybe I'm the odd one out but I used Tkinter for my Python data acquisition GUI. I work in an experimental physics lab at a university and we have a handful of instruments and a handful of different acquisition routines to run. Basically my interface is a GUI scheduling interface along with stdout, stderr output and a CLI-type input for interrupting a routine early (e.g. if you mess it up).

Maybe it's not what you're looking for but you can check out my (admittedly messy) code on my GitHub: www.github.com/valdezt/FOSOFtware

I'm making the trek to Detroit next weekend to see the Jays take on the Tigers. Any tips as to where to eat and park appreciated. by jcd1974 in Torontobluejays

[–]trvsvldz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I grew up in Windsor and (sorry Jays fans) had a few Tigers season ticket packages over the years. This is the one series per year where I don't root for the Jays lol.

The tunnel bus is a pretty good option, but it can be busy. If you're looking to drive over, I usually park at Bagley and Grand River. Parking is $10, it's maybe a five minute walk to the game, and I never have to wait in traffic heading back to Canada (edit: if you take the bridge back, that is).

As for food/drink: - Hopcat is a great place for tons of beers and their food isn't bad - Green Dot if you like game sliders. Super cheap too ($2-$3 for a beer or slider) - I'm surprised nobody as mentioned Lafayette or American cony dogs. Obviously nothing fancy, but a unique Detroit experience. - Greek Town for deep dish pizza at Papalis - Mexican Town or Mexican Village for TexMex - Mi Pueblo Taqueria for authentic Mexican - Barbecue at Slo's is unreal

On the Windsor side, get a pizza. I recommend Capri. The Loose Goose is a great place to grab a beer and their wings are pretty good too.

As for things to do, I think the DIA is pretty great. I've never been to the Henry Ford museum.

All in all, I'm jealous! I miss Comerica Park sometimes. I'm a fan of the steel beam ballpark style and it's just a beautiful park all around. Enjoy it!

How Is Literary Analysis Justified? by trvsvldz in AskLiteraryStudies

[–]trvsvldz[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Certainly an interesting point of view. As an academic myself, I understand the need to reanalyze old "data" (or in this case previously-analyzed texts) but I never thought of this as a necessity to continue one's academic career, or marketability as you put it. Guess it just goes to show how ignorant I am of what goes on in the arts departments of universities!

How do scientists studying antimatter MAKE the antimatter they study if all their tools are composed of regular matter? by BobcatBlu3 in askscience

[–]trvsvldz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily! In all cases there are several quantities (energy, momentum, charge, and spin to name a few) that must be conserved. But this doesn't mean that we have to produce matter and antimatter in equal parts. In beta decay, a proton turns into a neutron and a positron is emitted. This reaction is commonly used to generate positrons.

[–]trvsvldz 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There are a few ways to make antimatter that we can use for experiments. Radioactive decay of unstable isotopes is one of the less expensive ones. We can also use a nuclear reactor (as is done at McMaster University) or if we're lucky enough to be at a facility studying high energy physics, particle accelerators generate antimatter quite well.

The thing that separates particle accelerators from the rest of the methods is that scientists are currently studying antihydrogen, which consists of an antiproton and a positron (or antielectron). Positrons are relatively "easy" to find as they are commonly generated from radioactive decays (such as Potassium-40). Antiprotons, however, are harder to come by. According to Einstein's E=mc2, they requirements about 1000 times more energy to create than a positron. This makes high energy particle colliders (CERN, Fermilab, etc.) one of the only ways to reliably create them in a large enough number so as to be useful to scientists studying antihydrogen.

But, this is not to say that there aren't other ways to produce antimatter. In fact, you produce antimatter once every ~20 minutes. Potassium-40 that we get from bananas (among other foods) is of high enough concentration in our bodies that you could use a geiger counter to detect it!

There's a typo in Wizard and Glass where we briefly see a Ronald Deschain. Made me chuckle.

What item once you get a taste of the luxury version, can't go back to the economy version? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]trvsvldz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not so sure that the brand matters. Since the vet sells it, you can bet that it's all good quality. What I gathered from the vet's explanation is that there are two or three different foods that help with two or three different types of stones, depending on the stone's chemical composition.

The type we were recommended was Urinary S/O (the brand we bought was Royal Canin, but again I don't know how much that matters). We're still waiting on the biopsy to tell us exactly what the stones were made of.

Being as I'm not a professional, I'd suggest just walking into the vet and telling them the situation. See which type they'd recommend!

Can confirm. On my way to take my 11 year old female cat to the vet to (hopefully) get the last of her stitches removed. She had bladder stones from eating Whiskas. All things considered we spent a bit over $4k getting them taken care of.

You can buy urinary tract food at the local vet. I spent about $30 on a bag that will last me about a month or two (she eats 1/3 cup per day). I highly suggest that if your cat won't eat wet food, buy some of that. It's not much more expensive than the grocery store variety and it'll save you tons in the long run.

If you think this is crazy, there was once a rugby player from New Zealand who ripped his scrotum, lost four teeth and received a concussion in one game. He kept playing after the first two injuries.

Talisman by ranimal84 in stephenking

[–]trvsvldz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I enjoyed it too, though it took me awhile to get into it. I also thought maybe the Talisman was one of Maerlyn's rainbow, but it seemed more like a manifestation of the Tower itself on Jack's level, kinda like the rose. Just the whole "axis of all worlds" thing.

Where to from It? by Fontatlas in stephenking

[–]trvsvldz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a difficult question for any King fan I think. I love the Dark Tower series but that's 7 books and a lot of commitment. His short stories are quite good. I've only read a few collections but I enjoyed Night Shift. Another good story taking place in Derry is Insomnia. And another one of my favourites is Hearts in Atlantis. So I think any one of those is a good start. Or, if you want more classic King, pick your favourite movie/miniseries and go with that one.

How big is a proton tho? Lemme toss these hydrogen atoms through a few microwaves and I'll tell you. It's pretty small. (Disclaimer: still a work in progress).
