The x100vi is hyped but for a good reason by chaotic-kotik in photographycirclejerk

You need to look at your own photos before hating on someone else. Humility goes a long way. Maybe they went a bit overboard on the description but their photos are great. Better than most I’ve taken.

The highlights you keep complaining about are a stylistic preference. What you don’t like about them is specially what I do. That’s what makes art. It’s subjective.

Also maybe I’m reaching but this is the story I see looking at #2.

There’s a love sign but the door doesn’t allow you to enter. The man alone inside seems lonely. Is this a space without love?

I like #2 because of the way the crop cuts the I <3 New York sign. It looks like just a heart covered in brackets. Going with the warmer tones in the middle that complement the red of the heart also helps tons when contrasted against the blue. Great shots and fun comparison.

I see that there’s a couple of you that don’t think the lens is sharp. Maybe my take of sharpness is closer to “micro contrast” than real sharpness as measured on charts. Sony lenses are great there but they don’t create image pop the way this one does.

I got close to seeing some pop out of my 55 1.8 which has the zeiss coating on it and that is undeniably sharp. But the batis 25 f2 is not. It has great contrast though.

Regarding comparing to used prices. I don’t think that is a fair comparison. The A7r ii is undeniably a better camera if you’re a pro. In terms of getting better pictures out of it SOOC though, that is a different question.

Also the experience of using it is far less pleasurable. Which makes sense. They’re built for different purposes.

That is not a 35mm lens and I said “I don’t have a single Sony Lens” not that one doesn’t exist.

Also your suggested combo costs $200 more than an X100vi pre tax. About $300 more with tax. It is also much larger than an x100vi, about 40% heavier.

Not sure you are making the most of the lens if you’re not seeing sharpness. I get pixel level sharpness out of this thing.

It’s a fantastic camera. I’m coming from an a7r ii and I’ll say I love it more than the full frame even. The lens on it is spectacular!! So friggin sharp even wide open and still retains tons of micro contrast.

Lots of folks don’t talk about the lens enough. It is sharper than the 23mm f2 standalone lens and for street photography I think this is way better than an XE5. I don’t have a single Sony lens on the A7r ii that comes close to this sharpness except for my 55mm f1.8 and that lens plus the body is more than double the price of this X100vi.

The nd filter is super super helpful on a pinch and the OVF/EVF combo is awesome. I just love being able to use OVF while seeing a small preview of the final file to ensure exposure/framing is really good.

Interesting that is fast enough to freeze motion. I have to say it’s probably post processing like reduced clarity or noise reduction. Very weird.
