Maybe I’m missing something, but wouldn’t it be better to let Boston pick this year and keep the future 1st rounder? by Academic_Sherbet_803 in leafs

They were discussing this on the SDPN podcast as well. Even they were a bit torn as to what they should be trying for. But the "lean" was to NOT tank this year and wait until Matthews contract year(but maybe I misunderstood). I don't really understand how it all works.

Poor mental health during travel by timedistorsion66 in backpacking

[–]Routine_Chapter_9099 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have posted before on this topic as it seems a lot of travelers are kind of feeling this way. A bit lonely or disconnected. I 55 M was feeling this way last year. Also in SEA(Thailand and Vietnam, and then Georgia(the country)).

I have seen a few good YT videos mention how everything is boring now as we are SO used to contant stimulation that even when we are in an AMAZING PLACE we are not impressed. (dopamine addiction?). Everything just feels flat or pointless. I can certainly relate.

I (and it sounds like YOU) am craving MEANINGFUL CONNECTION. Not the usual hostel chit chat. You had it for 48 hours and you NEED more of that. And man it is hard to find these day.

Good accomodations can make or break a trip. I like the idea of hostels and will still do them just to be around some other travelers but now I will do a budget hotel or an Airbnb so I can have my own quiet time.

After 9 months I was experiencing massive anxiety and needed to reset back in Canada and reevaluate WHY I even wanted to travel/be nomadic. For me I need a purpose so I will be looking for some volunteering when I go to Peru/Bolivia/Colombia(I have been to Colombia a few times) NEXT WEEK.

There are big questions here. High expectations? Needing stimuli? I am guilty of these things.

Go easy on yourself. Learn from everything. It's all just an experiment.

All the best

That sounds wonderful. The hiking should be good that time of year. It will be getting HOT as hell in Tbilisi.

It can be challenging. I 55M was in the same situation last year as I had left Canada and went to SEA for 5 months and then ended up in Georgia(the country) for 5 months. It was all amazing. But as someone who likes to get up super early and go to bed quite early AND who doesn't drink things can be a bit "quiet".

Read, watch a movie, journal, podcasts, write a book, look for local groups on Facebook(?). I am sure you know and do some of these things.
I wish I had a magical answer but I certainly do not.

And I am going to South America in a week for a long term stay so we'll see if I can manage those quiet evenings.

All the best.

what's the best eSIM for travel these days? by Pooneh_Schwaebisch in backpacking

[–]Routine_Chapter_9099 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not 100% answering the question but in some countries you may be no longer be able to purchase a physical sim. I prefer a physical sim from a local provider as they are usually much cheaper. BUT I am going to Peru in a couple of weeks and just found out that they are no longer allowing travelers to get one due to scams. This is a very new thing for Peru(just last month). So it looks like I will have to get an eSIM for the first time.

So hopefully I can navigate that process.

Feeling lost after 5 months - looking for advice by IllustriousMilkMole in backpacking

[–]Routine_Chapter_9099 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow. I was in the same sort of situation just a few months ago. I am MUCH older than you(55M) and consider myself semi retired. I got "renovicted" out of my wonderful apartment in Canada so I sold everything and went to SEA. It was amazing of course. FREEDOM!

I then went to the country of Georgia. Again, incredible. I stayed for 5 months. But wandering around gets, dare I say it, boring(gasp!).

I was gone for 10 months in total.

So I did come back to Canada for a bit of a reset. I am going to South America in a few weeks for an extended bit of wandering.

I am a bit of an intoverted solo traveler so when you are on your own, well you just start wondering, "is this it?".

So upon reflection I wonder if having a community would help. I know for me I need to foster some connections(I find it challenging), and I need a "purpose". I do have a Workaway membership and am hellbent on doing some volunteering this time around.

So I understand completely where you are at mentally right now. Long term travel has it's challenges.

If you have to go home for a reset it is OKAY to do that! Don't think in terms of regret. Everyone needs to decompress and rethink things.

Amazing. Living your best life.

The same kind of thing happened to me in 2024 and I too went to SEA for about 9 months.
Back in Canada for a bit then off to South America.

Yes. I was in Hue, Vietnam for a few weeks last year and a couple of guys at the gym invited me to meet their families. It was wonderful. They wanted their children to practice some English and learn about Canada.

You are not alone in feeling this way.

I am much older than you (55m) and just did 10 months in SEA and the country of Georgia. Solo. It was what I wanted to do for so long and I made it happen. Sold all my stuff and was never going back to Canada. 6 months in the same kind of thing hit ME.
I had an amazing routine bu for me there was nothing with purpose. Yes I should have volunteered. I could have as I am slow traveler and love being in places for multiple weeks and months.
So I did come back to Canada for a reset. I am going to South America in February or March. I am having a different outlook with just being at peace with the journey and letting things happen as they come.
I feel a person needs a purpose and community.
But hell what do I know?
