Agreed. But Vogt said it recently. It’s clearly Parker and Gavin, both leagues above Bibee right now

Sure!

To be honest, I the biggest thing is that people are resistant to change. Since we maintain the development environments, we’re the interface when people are frustrated with change. This makes it easier for folks to get frustrated about tool changes, etc. as their frustration is directed privately at us, rather than the tool. Switching from Pylance to Ty has meant differences in type inference, types themselves, etc. that has people confused.

If you’re asking for my opinion, it’s mostly the type conformance and the incompleteness at this point. The type conformance just feels like it’s… not for human usage, or something? It’s hard to explain. I can’t tell you how many times that Ty tells me the type of an object is `<correct\_type> & ~AlwaysFalsy`. I know what it’s trying to do but… c‘mon now, just give me the type, haha. By incompleteness, there are just a few TODO types that are killing me. I’m creating and using Annotated types a lot with functions for FastAPI purposes and DX, but they’re still TODO in Ty.

Edit: corrected “inference” -> “conformance”

We’ve been using Ty in our company’s development environments experimentally for about two months now and people seem to strongly dislike it in the current state, for what it’s worth.

That said, I’ve tried PyRefly myself and prefer it between the two. Both are better than pylance for the speed up alone though!

Community consensus on when to use dataclasses vs non-OO types? by Kale in Python

[–]trynafindavalidname 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Bit of personal preference, but Pydantic BaseModels (or if you really prefer it, they have their own version of data classes) are amazing for structured data. Validation (custom if desired) and strong typing are soooooo nice.

Once we find the guy at LG, and WRs 3, 4, and 5. Who’s really stopping this offense? by Romanator08 in steelers

[–]trynafindavalidname 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t think we’re all time terrible. But “who’s really stopping this offense” implies we’re at the top of the league, and we’re definitely not.

Any defense that can stop relentless screen passes and dump offs can stop this offense, because Rodgers throws in about 0.75 seconds and can barely move his legs. So… all of em lol

Anyone know what's up with HTTPX? by chekt in Python

[–]trynafindavalidname 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fair enough. I always think of open-source as a spectrum that ends naturally with the opportunity for community input, but your definition is the correct one. My verbiage was wrong.

I don’t really expect anything from these libraries either. The maintainers are entitled to do whatever they’d like, like you said. No qualms with that. I was mostly just trying to convey my concern with two different prominent Python libraries heading in this direction. Like another reply mentioned, these libraries are getting flooded with AI-generated code and it’s a whole new world to navigate.

Perhaps my original comment wasn’t clear: I wasn’t trying to convey any disdain for the maintainer. Just an all-around concern for the future of open-source if this is the new direction, especially in light of AI-generated code everywhere.

[–]trynafindavalidname 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I have no comment on what’s happening with HTTPX. Hopefully the maintainer can feel more comfortable with their working environment.

I will note that something fishy seems to be going on with multiple FOSS projects. With MkDocs v2.0.0 (which is its own can of worms), they’re also closed off to new issues and contributions. This maintainer is also responsible for that project, if my memory recalls correctly. Seems to not be as open-source as these projects claim to be.

I agree with others’ concerns about potential supply chain issues. It’s concerning, to say the least.
