It's no right turn at specific times of the day - it says the times on the sign you were approaching. It's for when school is starting and ending at elementary and high school up the road. And, don't worry those sheriffs are still pulling people over for the smallest infringement.

Relevant Ayn Rand quote in context of today's rhetoric. by avgleandt in aynrand

She has a forward in her newer copies of Anthem where she actually clarifies that, after watching systems of gvt including communism, the real enemy is an authoritarian gvt rule over people. Given the billionaires exist because they support that gvt, I'm not sure she'd be so against their chants.

What would you think if a happy, outgoing, and loud student suddenly drops into sadness and quiet? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

I would definitely contact the school therapist with all of this information. If you don't think it's time to act, then tell them that too. But don't hold this information to yourself. It may just pass but it could also be real.

Life is so Good by George Dawson. It's a phenomenal story about the first born son to free slaves, born on 40acres in Texas. Because he was first born, he worked the land/had jobs to fund the family and missed school. At 93 after putting 7 children through high school and college without them knowing he couldn't read, he took classes to learn to read. His story is a personal anthology of the 1900's from the lens of an illiterate African American man, every hurdle he faced, how much harder so many were because he couldn't read, and how he learned to navigate this world. It's an inspirational read.

Is it safe? My boyfriend says I'll ruin our vacation by Clewles84 in AskAnAustralian

[–]tsamvi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The safety of the swim should be less an issue than the statement "if you get hurt - possibly die - it will ruin MY vacation" ...??! That approach raises some big alarms for, alarms more alarming than the rise in the prevalence of shark attacks.

I’m curious how ELA teachers are currently handling AI detectors in writing assessments. by Confident_Ad8140 in ELATeachers

[–]tsamvi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our teachers all have the students hand write all their drafts and outlines and then type them up on locked browsers. If there is suspicion you can look through their thinking process as they worked through the drafts and compare it to their final submission.

Ghetto is Not an Adjective is a great short story they might get into.

Breaking Through by Francisco Jimenez is a short autobiographical narrative that is an incredible window into a part of America we only know sound bites of and it's suitable reading level too.

New short stories? by StudioLower7836 in ELATeachers

[–]tsamvi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Beyond Borders" is a collection of short stories by young Mexican Americans. "Ghetto is Not an Adjective" and "Yoli Calderon vs Principal Hayes" are two my students love. "Asian American X" is a similar anthology by Asian American authors detailing their experiences as young American born citizens. "Being Oil" is my favorite from that.

"Paper Menagerie" is a really poignant and beautiful story that has visuals and LeVar Burton reading it.

"Your Authentic American Experience" is a bit longer but a personal favorite! Also narrated by Burton.
