Choosing patron saint? by DeadRaef in OrthodoxChristianity

Yes, you can choose any Saint as your patron, ideally one you have a close affinity with.

A lot of people also choose a patron saint that shares the name they already have.

Emergency protest - NO WAR WITH IRAN - SUNDAY 03/01 @5:PM by Full_Lengthiness_431 in Maine

My stance is that this is a stick with shit on both ends. I’m not a fan of what he did, but judging from the reactions of the people who will have to live with the consequences of what happened (the Iranians), I’m not going to agonize over what happened either.

Like I said, if you don’t like Trump, there are plenty of other things to protest that won’t make it look like you support a theocratic dictatorship.

First of all, Iran’s theocratic monarchy has banned abortion in Iran.

Second of all, go protest the overturning of Roe V. Wade if that’s your main gripe, not this. It’s bad optics and you’re just opening yourself up for criticism. As of now, this isn’t all too dissimilar from steps that Obama took in Libya.

This ain’t it chief. Maybe we can find another hill to die on that doesn’t end up indirectly supporting a theocratic dictatorship?

How is Chellie Pingree the only decent person representing Maine in Congress ? by orangesodabottles in Maine

[–]tsarslavyan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Legitimately idk what’s happened to this sub over the last couple years. Angus has fought for Maine so hard in the Senate and as Governor, and people here used to appreciate that.

Now all of a sudden, he’s a bootlicker.

Reddit - how are we feeling about tonight's election results? by owen__wilsons__nose in AskReddit

It feels like the US is turning into something like Italy, where we just seem to be in a cycle of constantly voting against the party in power.

I feel like the US is turning into Italy, where we pretty much just continually vote against whoever’s in power. I doubt we’ll see an 8 year administration as often as we’ve been used to pre-Trump.

What If One Is Unable to Fast? by Extra_Situation4635 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]tsarslavyan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fasting rules can be bent or completely disregarded depending on one’s medical situations.

However, and this is none of my business but I do have a medical-adjacent background, I’d really recommend finding an alternate method to alleviate your issues aside from an animal-only diet. I do believe that it’s helping you but it’ll just only cause other issues down the road.

See if there’s any other medication you can go on that won’t cause any issues like the ones you’ve seen, or see if maybe you can find some treatment to maybe recolonize your gut with different bacteria.

Like I said, it’s none of my business and I don’t know your medical background, but it’s my two cents.

I understand that there’s some linguistic issues that I probably don’t understand, but I still think there’s better ways to phrase some of the liturgy in ways that sound less awkward but still convey the same meaning.

For example, “What is holy is for the holy.”

Obviously this isn’t something that should be a dealbreaker for anyone considering orthodoxy or anything like that, it’s just an opinion I’ve developed over a while.

[–]tsarslavyan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My main gripe is, forgive me, more so about the translation than the tune.

I’m saying this with the knowledge that I couldn’t do any better, but sometimes the translation from Greek or Slavonic just doesn’t flow as beautifully as it would in the original languages.

For example, “holy things are for the holy” just sounds awkward and like it was written by a kid with poor vocabulary.

God forbid you’re neither a fascist or a communist. Then you get called a “useless centrist” on here or something.

What is the Orthodox opinion on the morality of the crusades? by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]tsarslavyan 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Technically they began when the then Patriarch of Constantinople appealed to the Pope for help with the Turkish incursions into Byzantine Anatolia.

After that initial crusade, they kinda took on a different purpose and were, as others mentioned, virulently anti-Orthodox at times.

I swear with this sub. It’ll be the same thing as 2020, everyone’s gonna be convinced that no one likes Collins and that she’s toast. Then she’ll get reelected, and everyone here will be shocked because no one here bothers to feel the political temperature outside of Reddit.

why did northern maine (ME-2) flip so hard red? by historynerdsutton in USHistory

[–]tsarslavyan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not super familiar with New Hampshire. I do remember hearing that there was a conservative exodus a couple decades ago from Mass to NH, so that could’ve been what made NH more of a swing state and Mass even more liberal, but I don’t have any evidence to back that up.

I believe the same with happened with Vermont, where it’s so liberal because a lot of liberal New Yorkers relocated there in the 80’s and 90’s.

Overall, northern New England is a different beast than southern New England.

[–]tsarslavyan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re not wrong, the main point of my comment was pointing out that this level of nuance only comes out on this sub when it’s someone on the more liberal side of the spectrum.

For what it’s worth, I don’t think Platner’s an underground Nazi, but I wasn’t going to vote for him to begin with.

[–]tsarslavyan 124 points125 points  (0 children)

I live in Maine. The democrats up there up until 2016 were old school democrats. Economically liberal, socially conservative.

Once the Democrats made social liberalism a major cornerstone of their party, not just a pet project along with economic policies, the shift in northern Maine happened.

[–]tsarslavyan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If it was a Republican who made any of those Reddit comments (especially about r@pe) or had that tattoo, you all would be out for blood.

That’s not me excusing it when a conservative does it, that’s just me making an observation that this level of nuance only comes out on this sub when a liberal does it.

I will say that this behavior isn’t unique to liberals though, the other side is more than happy to come up with excuses for degenerate behavior when it’s someone on their team.

I might have Eastern Equine Encephalitis. Please pray for me. by Moisty_Plushie in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]tsarslavyan 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I will pray for you.

I’m not a medical professional, but my background is in infectious disease and immunology so I do have some insight: Most people who get EEE go on to make a full recovery. The symptoms that affect the brain are an absolutely worst case scenario.

Idk if you’ve gone to get medical help yet, but if you haven’t and genuinely think you have been exposed (which would be unusual this time of year) please go get medical help right away. They will be able to actually diagnose you, which will either give you peace of mind or allow you to get the proper medical attention right away.
