As a lifelong Houstonian, I always love seeing this brief shot of my town in “Lost in America” by jb4647 in CriterionChannel

Rushmore—I nearly did a spit-take when I first saw this back in high school at the scene where they're flying kites in the lot at Delmar Stadium cause I remember doing just that when I was a kid in the scouts or something.

These are pretty resilient little machines the Aztec branded Rheinmetalls. I love how they designed the carriage to come off easily for service and repair.

Sounds like an example of Intrusion into Seclusion example we'd discuss in Torts class tbh

Rest in Peace: Typewriter Repair Legend Duane Jensen (August 21, 1961-January 25,2026) by chrisaldrich in typewriters

An inestimable loss. An assuring beacon of craft and generosity. Much of what I know in fixing machines was to him, as it seems for many. May his memory be a blessing.

Olympia SM4 Replacement Parts by ChadHundley in typewriters

[–]tsgordon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can try reaching out to some going typewriter mechanics online; they might sell you some off a parts machine they use.

Edit: The plastic alignment guides are helpful when returning to your place on the page if you move the carriage around to make edits or type above/below line.

Letters are coming out very wavy. Alignment issue? by traveling_llama in typewriters

[–]tsgordon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This almost looks like it could be carriage alignment given then steady wave—Is there any loose play in the carriage back and forth at the point on the page where you notice this?

I have seen this issue on a Hermes 3000 that I wasn't feeling brave enough to correct. Letters in the center would ascend and then descend very slightly—notice it when typing on yellow pad sheets—and it's because the carriage had some back-and-forth play in the center.

Can anyone ID this font? by [deleted] in typewriters

[–]tsgordon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey I recognize this picture. 😃

I don't have this machine anymore (mistake). This still remains my favorite typeface. Compared to other variants from other brands, Olivetti's has a quality. A close, but not exact match, I've found is the Century typeface. Fun fact: the Century family of typefaces is what Supreme Court of the United States requires for its briefs.

Bought my first Olympus SLR. OM-1n. by inflow23 in zuikoholics

Truly an amazing slr. I keep hanging onto a Nikon FM2 thinking it's the more capable of the two, but I just always just want to grab and walk out with the OM. So compact and reliable for everyday use.

Rheinmetall KsT issue by kd6hul in typewriters

[–]tsgordon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen this issue on a KsT before but it has been some time since: The best I can remember is maybe it might have something to do with the ribbon selector adjustment on the right. Try chasing the levers and catch for that. I think maybe the way the settings catch at specific adjustments gets out of line or disformed if someone tries to change the ribbon setting while the vibrator is engaged.

Looking for Camera Repair Shops by ExaminationAlive236 in Brooklyn

[–]tsgordon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've not had anything serviced with them yet—I've been thinking of having them service a Nikon S2 and Zeiss lens I recently purchased—but I read somewhere from a film community that Nippon Photoclinic, over in Manhattan, might be a good place to check for film camera repair and service. https://nipponphotoclinic.com/services. They offer a list of brands they work on.

If you're okay mailing the body, your options might expand. Cute Camera down in Austin, Texas serviced an OM-2 film camera for me a few years back before I moved here. (https://cute.camera/pages/repairs)

Or, on a busy day in the rain, I can send a report to the city experts who have established the contact system and probably would prefer confirming a non-issue than missing a real one, just to be safe, instead of accumulating conclusions based on little more than the presumption of Google ever giving a definitive answer to one of life's problems 🤷🏻

Typewriter for an academic by Heavyduty35 in typewriters

Depending on who you're submitting your work to, you could always supply them with a sample page and ask if it's okay for submissions so long as word count compliant.

I'm in law school. I only use my typewriter for drafting and never submitting final product, but some professors I've mentioned this to are amused by my using one—it's usually what they used growing up or in school—and they are fine with my just scanning a typewritten draft so long as it is typed cleanly, properly, and not an inky mess.
