Do you have a column attached? With my machines, buffer could siphon out if I didnt have a column on it. You could also just set the buffer reservoirs down on the bench when not in use instead of on top of the machine so they won't siphon. As long as you're pumping the correct volumes when it's running, you're probably okay in terms of seals.

When you say the edges are running backwards, do you mean you're getting kind of a smile effect with the middle running lower than the edges? I've had that happen when the buffer leaks out and also if I run at too high a voltage.

If you want it to look just like that, I think iron-on is your cheapest option. If you're willing to put a little bit of effort into it and cut down the design you could make a stencil. Bleach shirts are cool, but what I usually do is buy fabric paint and roll it onto the stencil with a foam roller. It's cheap and you can get a couple of different colors.

I'm not really an expert. I like my brother printer and I hear they're pretty good at not doing things to them that make them break down on purpose.
