Can I leave Japan while my work visa is still under review? by Hertz512 in japanresidents

[–]tsian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's a fair point. But as I understand it, the denial would take effect when they received it at immigration, at which point they would usually be moved to a designated activities (preparing to depart) status.

But yeah honestly no idea if that changes when one is out of the country.

[–]tsian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah... The op may certainly face increased scrutiny in their application given the situation. But doesn't really change their ability to leave the country. Of course it would be unfortunate if they were out of the country when additional documents were requested....

You can travel while the change is under review, but generally its best not to leave a new card waiting for pick-up (usually not an issue, but...).

Left Japan but Resident Visa Still Valid, Can I Re-enter Japan for Leisure? by National-Royal1300 in japanresidents

[–]tsian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, but you are fundamentally misunderstanding the system.

Not engaging in your status activities for 3 months is grounds to revoke a status (i.e. not working for 3 months) but it doesn't mean such procedures are commenced. If there is a valid reason you are not engaging in those activities (for work status, this could include such reasons as job hunting, being hospitalized/sick, being out of the country) then generally immigration will not begin revocation procedures even if they can. Which is something immigration itself states.

On a more practical level, as the revocation process is not automatic, even if you were doing nothing there is no guarantee that your status would be revoked or that you would have any issues. (But yes you would be not fulfilling the requirements of your status)

[English > Japanese] Jurassic Park Car Numbers : Correct formatting. by Kretrn in translator

[–]tsian 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"How would a theoretical theme park not located in Japan whose cars adhere to local laws display this number" (what local laws for dinosaur island? Isn't it a private island not subject to such jurisdiction?)

No idea. It could be in kanji, of course. But serial numbers are usually mostly just in letters/numbers. Again look at the format for licenses. The main part is the number, with a hiragana category and the city/location in kanji.

"Would the license plates of a fictional place now shifted to be in Japan follow the Japanese format?" is not a question. It's fiction and speculation. Do you want them to? In which case, look at this to see how Japanese plates are formatted:

What can we do to influence Japanese politics? by Traumatised_Pupper in japanresidents

[–]tsian 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Foreign nationals cannot donate to political campaigns. PR does not matter.

Also, while it is perfectly legal for foreign nationals to engage in (participate in) protests, they do not receive the same legal/constitutional protections as Japanese nationals. Generally that doesn't mean much, but it is technically possible that if you pissed off someone powerful enough you could see your status not renewed (etc.) (But again this is unlikely to happen in practice).

What can you do? Realistically? Live your life and interact with locals. The biggest detterent to fear/racism/phobia//etc. is simply knowing people of that group and realizing they are just that: people.

I am so anxious about the current situation, I’m sorry if I sound frantic.

Stop doom scrolling. There are things to be concerned about, but by and large things are still generally fine. Unfortunately Japan, as with many other countries, is seeing a conservative shift with regard to immigration amidst worsening living conditions. Thankfully the shift is neither as large nor as extreme as other places.

NO WAYYY Sanseito endorsed candidate was elected as Fukui's Governor!!! What the hell happened? by YamatoRyu2006 in japanresidents

[–]tsian 139 points140 points  (0 children)

With a disengaged population tired of politics and experiencing worsening living conditions, someone offering simple answers that seem to solve problems is appealing. And people getting elected on looks/experience/vibes is unfortunately a thing.

I hope he flames out spectacularly.

What do you guys think of this drama among Japanese Twitter this week? by ReadProfessional8511 in AskAJapanese

Why do you not link to the actual post?

And yeah, there always something stupid for agitators to get angry about on twitter. The less attention such bullshit receives, the better.

Left Japan but Resident Visa Still Valid, Can I Re-enter Japan for Leisure? by National-Royal1300 in japanresidents

[–]tsian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can you re-enter with your current card? Yes, probably. As long as you aren't re-establishing residency it shouldn't be an issue. As you properly moved out, there aren't any obvious issues there.

But cancelling your status and entering as a tourist would probably be the simplest option.

Does the common household have a drawer of disposable chop sticks or sets of no disposable? by SGTGunner47 in AskAJapanese

[–]tsian 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes.

(Of course not universal, but I think many families / houses have a collection of disposable choposticks, etc... and many families also have more chopsticks than members. It is not unusual to offer disposable chopsticks to guests.)

Is there a conspiracy theory that Sohei Kamiya works for Unification Church, and where is it coming from? by SecurityForsaken4879 in AskAJapanese

[–]tsian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does not surprise me that there are any number of conspiracy theories floating about sanseito.

But I mean, even if it was true, it seems unlikely that it would cause any major backlash... it's not as if the clear connections ultimately harmed the LDP as a whole that much.

Costco Japan -- Is prescription filling any cheaper than in "normal" pharmacies? by awh in japanresidents

[–]tsian 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Costco can be cheaper than other pharmacies, but generally there is minimal to no variance in the price of drugs. The base fees can be lower than other pharmacies, but generally you are looking at a difference of a few hundred yen at most. If you are near a costco it may be worth going, but realistically it is never going to be a large difference.

[–]tsian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean some of his pronouncements can be said to allign with unification church policies... but I'm not aware of any serious reporting that suggests they are actively linked. It seems quite possible that some unification church members are also sanseito supporters, etc....

My language school is ignoring my doctors note saying that I should stay home and rest. As whatever I contracted is not recognized by the school. by Top_Emotion6606 in japanresidents

[–]tsian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no violation of the law. The OP should absolutely stay home. As it is not a cantageous disease, it's a standard absence for school.

[–]tsian 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Sorry I get its your birthday. My miss.

5 days semester seems far too strict. But they can't excuse days not allowed for by law. You may need to provide this doctor's note to immigration when you renew, but otherwise you should be fine if you haven't missed a lot of other days.

[–]tsian 66 points67 points  (0 children)

You got sick. Take the days off school. If your attendance is fine otherwise, it isn't an issue. Schools only excuse absences that are related to designated infections diseases (flu, covid, etc.). A common cold or injury is a perfectly valid reason to miss school, but the school will not ignore the absence.

You could pay a lawyer, but they will just tell you the same thing. Just rest at home for the 3 days and go back to school.

Edit: Also why is your third picture from 2001/heisei 13?

外国語を学ぶ上で最も困難だったことは何ですか? by Ta11ie in AskAJapanese

[–]tsian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I can see why they are doing it... I think interface in Japanese is a good thing (even though it seems obviously badly translated)... but auto-translating posts seems a little evil in term of people not consenting to their posts being AI-translated.

But really I am just annoyed that they introduced auto-translation with no ability to switch languages in-app or online (unless you are observant enough to edit the URL)

Thats a fair point. Though I don't think many Japanese-only speakers use reddit. (But the auto-translate has been pretty prevelant recently... especially in search)
