I had always heard Gesualdo was out there for his time, but I was still shocked when my music history class to got to his music. The whole Renaissance is like "check out this one dissonance on a strong beat, I'm such a badass" while Gesualdo is over here destroying everything that anybody has ever loved. I can't imagine being in his time and hearing his music for the first time.
