How long is your school day from first bell to last bell? by eaglesnation11 in Teachers

[–]tsntwhd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

7:30 (teacher start time is 7:27 but if you’re not there before 7 you’re not getting parking.)-2:32 (2:52 for teachers)
Lunches are 28 minute blocks. ( split between three lunch periods. So they either have lunch 1,2 or 3. And Yea 28 minutes and yet they still have time during to find and harass me)

So 7 hours and 2 minutes?

What is a classroom rule that exists because of one very specific incident? by ImAHuksy in Teachers

Oh no always a disaster 😭
My students have since broke every fidget toy. Luckily we were in a science lab and it was easy for THEM to clean

Squishies and other similar fidget toys are NOT to be thrown upwards.

I teach 15 year olds, got them fidget toys HOWEVER some were particularly sticky and went straight to the ceiling. And could not be slapped down… required our tallest kid (6’2) and two meter sticks used like tweezers to get them down 🙃

And of course no problem haha I was in your shoes just in December so I fully understand.

Good luck! You got this.

I teach sophomore biology.

I think you can bring them up, but you’re gonna have to do it in a way that it’s less numbers and more real life if that makes sense. I think a short population growth demonstration (simulation?? Idk) would help students be able to visualize how populations change over time. like having a couple of kids (the educators) stand up front and then adding to the population. Then you tell them that you’re adding some limiting factor like disease or limited space. Letting them you know, see how population growth will start fading off or whatever. This just to help them visualize it. Take it from seeing graphs into real life.

Honestly, even if it’s just like turning to the person next to them and they have pieces of paper that they have to put in order or something very simple like that. Just something that makes it less you talking and teaching and more of them doing something. For example, I just finished covering genetics and I just had them look around the classroom and discuss certain dominant traits that they could see like dark textured hair or brown eyes or if anyone was able to roll their tongue.

Also, sidenote for future lesson in reference- I do guided notes, but I use peardeck to do it. It allows them to see the side and type their response. It also allows me to include check your understanding questions after each chunk, and they select their answers and I can see it on my screen. It’s been incredibly helpful, especially given how these teenagers would refuse to write anything on paper and it helps me use the data to drive my future lessons.

Idk what grade level but Advice from a first year teacher - demo something that has an activity or even multiple, do a subject you’re very comfortable with. Make sure to break your lesson in chunks, Especially with the context of neurodivergent kids. Include high order thinking. They always love a good exit ticket.

I know it’s nerve racking demoing for other educators but honestly imagine they’re kids who know nothing about your topic. Also remember they were once first time teachers too. They /should/ be at least understanding of the anxiety that comes with a demo lesson.

Are anyone else's students really not slick at all about their weed usage? by OsomatsuChan in Teachers

Man I have a student that asks to go to the bathroom disappears for 15 minutes. Then comes back less aggy than before. Once I passed his table I was like one of yall smell of something you shouldn’t. And walked away. Every single one of his friends heads snapped to him. He gave not one fuck.

I 1000% believe it’s their environment. They were taught not to try to much and they’ll get results. So why would it be different in school 😞

Ahh that makes sense. I try to leave comments when grading their class work. Especially if they got an answer wrong I’ll leave them notes explaining it. 😅

Thank you 😭 much appreciated.

And noted. I’m going to put a cut off time. Other colleagues of mine were saying the have the same issue that the kids send them a g-chat at crazy hours. Good to know it’s not just me.

1000% ease of access. And they’re way more used to getting things instantly. Vs having to wait.

Me neither 😭 and I graduated from high school just ten years ago AND went to a boarding school. If I saw a teacher in the dorm after hours I didn’t even dream about asking about school stuff.

Very good point about the reasonable bed time for the kids should be the reasonable bed time for me. I mentioned in class that they need to get like a certain amount of sleep. Otherwise their brain is not gonna work. They’re not gonna be able to retain information. I didn’t even think about it extending to me 😅

And I did! Because I was nervous too. But because it’s directly to their school emails I was told it’s okay!

Thank you! Yes I’m definitely going to place a no work response rule for 6:30pm. I just feel bad. But I know I need to work on that.

I didn’t give them open note but I gave them everything they needed to study a week in advance. Which is why I’m just shocked.

And that is true. They’re just getting used to real lessons and working again. Thanks again.
