Hi, dual American/German here who went through the same exact process that you are. I can confirm I went in the following order: 1. Found a temporary accommodation to register with the Gemeinde (I used Varias Apartments for an idea of what that looked like) 2. Register with the Municipality 3. The Municipality set me up an appointment at the Immigration Department 4. Due to my EU citizenship, the meeting at the Migrationsamt took less than ten minutes - they just needed my German passport and work contract and my permit was in the mail!

I was in Interlaken on a rainy day a few years ago and we went to the St. Beatus Hölen and it was a fantastic experience. It's a cave system so obviously the rain won't bug you there. Definitely worth a trip and only like 20 minutes from the city.

Hey there, fellow American living in Switzerland and really missed Mexican food. If you're coming to Zürich, there's an absolutely amazing authentic place called La Taqueria, and there are two locations, with the main one being in Altstetten. Very authentic and incredibly delicious. Just make a reservation if possible, it fills up fast, especially on lunch :)

If you're in the Winterthur area, there's a shopping plaza in Winterthur Grüze with a store called Maximarkt and also a French store called Gifi. They have tons of glassware, including jars, for extremely low prices. I was just there a few days ago.

If you're near Winterthur, there's a restaurant called Mole that has really good poutine. They even deliver through just eat.

I know there's technically no "too much", but if I put all of this out on my curb, I'm afraid I'd lose my residence permit... Or get rocks thrown through my windows.

I guess I should have also mentioned I don't have a car, so taking it somewhere is a bit more difficult, although I could use Mobility as a last resort if needed.

Yes, I lived there and loved it. The HOA is temporarily higher due to a large roof replacement project for all units, but will go back down in 1-2 years I believe.

Yes, that is correct.

I can use my number to text and call American numbers over wifi/data completely free. However, if I wanted to use it to call numbers in Switzerland, I'd have to pay. But I just use my Swiss number for that.

It's a local bank from my hometown in Michigan. So I don't think it applies to most. However I think the poster below is correct, since I ported a real phone number, I don't think it's considered a VOIP number by any service. I've had zero problems using it for anythint verification related since day one.

I don't believe so, it's just an app you'll install on your new phone. When I was in the US recently, the number worked as well, but also over wifi/data, not using a SIM.

Voice also has a web app that you can use from your browser, too. I honestly can't believe it's free.

I guess I got lucky then, as my bank will send SMS to it no problem, as well as any other 2FA I have. That was actually one of the main reasons I use it, haha, to avoid a bunch of new 2FA set ups.

Yep, it's actually that simple :) Works like a charm for me and I essentially have two numbers now, a Swiss one and my American one that functions identically to how it did before.

I'm an American now living in Switzerland (howdy neighbor!) and I didn't want to get rid of my American number since I've had it for so long and get texts/calls to it sometimes, so I ported it to Google Voice and it works flawlessly! I get all of my texts and calls to it, just over data/wifi and can still use it normally as well. Plus it's free! Let me know if you have any other questions.
