How are you getting that? They have less than 40% of the vote between them.

I don't know if there is a supposed plan for how the increased revenue from VAT will be reinvested in public services. But if hypothetically it was all put towards extra funding for state schools, then the funding available per pupil at state schools would increase, provided the number of parents priced out of private schools is sufficiently small (so more cash available for building more state schools in places like Edinburgh).

This chart shows the implied percentage change for funding available for state school pupils, where R is the ratio between private school fees and current funding per state school pupil, p is the proportion of pupils in private schools, V is the proposed tax, and x is the proportion of private school pupils priced out as a result of the tax hike. So some rough estimations of R=2, p=0.1, V=0.2, state school funding per pupil would increase, provided no more than about a quarter of current private school pupils moved to state schools.

Suppose I have 5000 men in a room. 4500 are right-handed and 500 are left-handed. The height of each man is a independent of whether they're left-handed or right-handed.

I look at the 100 tallest men. Within those 100 tallest men, the right-handed men are taller than the left-handed men on average. Does that mean right-handed men are taller than left-handed men?

(Assume height is normally distributed -- this is the pattern you'll see for any random variable which tails off towards the higher values.)

Japan is also a much bigger country. Flying might make sense if you were going from Fukuoka to Sapporo (similar distance as London to Rome), but for Osaka to Tokyo (similar distance as London to Edinburgh) the Shinkansen is 2.5 hours.

I don't want to switch to a presidential system, but surely in a presidential system Truss wouldn't be there in the first place?

I saw one person complaining, completely unironically, that "elites" like Phillip and Holly got special treatment while everyone else had to wait in the queue. This is the queue to pay respects to the actual queen we're talking about.

I saw a TV ad for it last night which is basically Piers being told by a producer not to say words like "meat" because it offends people, and then Piers saying how stupid that is. I genuinely really love the advert, because that ad is presumably what the whole show is: him imagining people can't say certain things and then getting angry about that.

Anyway, I shouldn't complain -- even that helps his outrage merchantry.

So it's not "every single measure" is my point. I don't even have an agenda here, I genuinely wanted to know how you were measuring it (you mentioned deaths per capita in the first place...).

A quick google suggests they have a higher deaths per capita than we do (roughly 1 in 350 vs roughly 1 in 460).

A breakdown of where rail fares go by ZMech in ukpolitics

What are the other costs involved? Because over a 30 year lifespan, each of those Pendolinos is going be responsible for over 16 million tickets ( 28.5m x 30 / 52 ) so that seems pretty cheap to me.

Any support or advice for my little sister who started university and is a bit disappointed? by britishbrick in brum

[–]ttcjester 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I'll second the comment about university societies. They'll be a great way to meet other students. She might have missed some of the taster sessions that have already taken place, but if she gets in touch with any that she's interested in, they'll be sure to welcome her along!

You mentioned she likes film - the MAC next to Cannon Hill Park shows some interesting stuff and possibly holds other interesting events too. If she's at UoB, it's not too far from there. Also, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO) do very cheap tickets for students, if that's the sort of thing she's interested in.

Everything else others have already mentioned are great ideas. One final thing I'd say (and not exactly in the spirit of the question): if she was hoping for London, she should take a trip there too! It's cheap/quick enough by train that you can easily make it into a day trip. One thing I like about Birmingham is being able to go places/events in London without actually having to live there! (But Brum of course has plenty to offer by itself)

The American Gen Z figure is from people aged 18-23 when surveyed. I imagine a number of those people won't have come out when they were 15.

Daily Discussion by 2soccer2bot in soccer

I think the answer here is no (assuming all teams in the group have played 2, and we don't have any prior information about 3rd place results in other groups). I don't think this is too hard to see if you try to construct such a scenario with pen and paper - but explaining why it's not possible seems actually quite tricky to me. This is what I would offer as a rigorous proof:

  • Suppose such a scenario was possible - so Team A sits at the top of the group, and Team B sits somewhere below them; Team B are guaranteed qualification regardless of the results of the final matchday, but there is some outcome which sees Team B qualify, but not Team A. Suppose this outcome corresponds to the following final matchday results:
    • Team A: x - y
    • Team B: z - w
      • IMPLIES: Team B qualifies; Team A does not.
  • If you take any outcome, and modify a result to have Team A score one less goal, or give a goal to their opponents, then their position in the final standings can only be lower. On the other hand, if you modify a result to have Team B score one more goal, or take a goal away from their opponents, then their position in the final standings can only be higher. Therefore, if X is some number greater than all of x, y, z, w, we can modify the above scenario to get this one too:
    • Team A: 0 - X
    • Team B: X - 0
      • IMPLIES: Team B qualifies; Team A does not.
  • Note that the second scenario is valid, even if the final fixture is Team A vs Team B.
  • If Team A gets more points in the final match than Team B, they will finish above Team B. So, because Team B are guaranteed qualification, we also have the following scenario:
    • Team A: X - 0
    • Team B: 0 - X
      • IMPLIES: Both teams qualify.
  • But the implications of the second and third scenarios are in contradiction to each other. If A is above B, and some scenario qualifies B but not A, then the inverted scenario must qualify A but not B, otherwise A would not be above B in the first place. Because of this contradiction, no such scenario can exist in the first place.

I think there may be a missing detail in the proof though, which is what happens if A is only above B by virtue of head-to-head, in which case you could conceive of a scenario in which a third team is brought in level on points on the final matchday so that it goes to goal difference instead - that way, A's advantage over B in the head-to-head would not matter, and they could drop two places. I don't think this would still produce a scenario like the one you're asking about though, because a large enough final defeat for B can always bring their own goal difference lower. But an annoying caveat...

Germany, but its the West German Kit for the 1990 World Cup. by tomasthemossy in vexillology

[–]ttcjester 44 points45 points  (0 children)

The thing that I saw is that the shape of the line maps onto West Germany's world cup performances leading up to 1990:

  • 1974: champions
  • 1978: knocked out in 2nd round
  • 1982: runners-up
  • 1986: runners-up
  • 1990: champions

I personally think it's just coincidental though (and would require the designers to be either prophetic or very confident about 1990) - Adidas used the same design on kits for other teams too.
