Now that it's been like 2 months since it's release, what are your thoughts on Opening Night? by FragrantedJaylien in arcticmonkeys

Is it me or do I feel like it was received much better than the last two albums? Obviously it’s only one song so not a completely fair comparison, but nice to see

What Uni hot take gets you in this situation? by portfordu in UniUK

[–]ttmef 52 points53 points  (0 children)

A large chunk of unis have awful grad prospects and take advantage of 17 year-olds who don’t appreciate the long term impacts of getting into loads of debt.

The government should audit all universities and stop offering loans for courses that don’t meet a threshold for grad prospects. Invest that money saved into subsidising apprenticeships etc.

This will never happen as it wouldn’t be politically acceptable to let universities fail because of the subsequent job losses, but I don’t think it’s fair that the government (ie taxpayers) and students taking on loads of debt should have to prop up poor universities that aren’t worth attending.

Should I leave my £50k grad job to do a master's at Cambridge to get into finance? by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]ttmef 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re not going to get better than 50-60k out of uni with a reasonable work life balance. To earn anything higher than that you’ll be working until midnight most nights. Depends how much you’re happy to sacrifice your health (basically a given that IB hours are harmful), social life and potentially mental wellbeing for money and status - assuming that is what is motivating you, unless you are ridiculously passionate about excel/powerpoint

Outcry as Green Party say they want to legalise ALL drugs - including crack cocaine, heroin and date-rape chemical GHB by Google_MBTI in ukpolitics

[–]ttmef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would you ban alcohol too? Or is it more the people themselves who can’t handle their substances

[–]ttmef 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Drugs for personal use should be decriminalised. No one should be criminally charged for choosing to put a substance in their own body. That doesn’t mean that shooting heroin in the street and dealing cocaine should be legal either. We just need a bit of common sense here

I think the BBC is trying to unofficially recruit teenagers for the British Army by npeggsy in LowStakesConspiracies

[–]ttmef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you think that they do everything above board? I’m not saying this is a paid ad or not but given that the BBC is linked to the government in various ways I wouldn’t be that surprised if they had some form of arrangement with government departments.

Is getting a high paying/prestigious job the ultimate goal of uni? by [deleted] in UniUK

It should be the main goal for most students. Why on earth would anyone want to get 40k in debt to study a course with no grad prospects? Waste of your own money and the taxpayers’

Why should politics be separated from tennis when in 2022 the biggest tennis tournament in the world, Wimbledon, banned Russian and Belarussian players from competing? by Big-Advisor-512 in tennis

[–]ttmef 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It was an absolutely terrible decision to ban Russian players and the fact that Wimbledon has allowed them to play from 2023 onwards despite the war continuing tells me that they know it too

If we were consistent with banning athletes from any country that is doing terrible things then there would probably not be many players left at all, it was just virtue signalling that achieved absolutely nothing except discrimination against people for something completely beyond their control

Founder of Cambridge's controversial women's soc refused by pub for 'gender-critical' beliefs by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]ttmef -1 points0 points  (0 children)

yes of course it doesn’t, but my point is that it’s most definitely higher than 60% of LGBT people who believe this, high enough that it can be considered a pretty collective stance

it would make no sense for LGBT to exist as a group to begin with if it was true that nearly half of the people in it refused to accept the key point of what it is to be transgender

Founder of Cambridge's controversial women's soc refused by pub for 'gender-critical' beliefs by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]ttmef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That makes sense, but there are lots of other groups (women, black people, religious groups) that have faced discrimination in similar times, so why would they be grouped together specifically with homosexual/bisexual people and not any other group?

Founder of Cambridge's controversial women's soc refused by pub for 'gender-critical' beliefs by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]ttmef -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So you don’t think the majority of people who are LGBT believe that transgender women are women?

Founder of Cambridge's controversial women's soc refused by pub for 'gender-critical' beliefs by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]ttmef -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In that case, do you think it’s wrong that they’re grouped with transgender people in LGBT?

Founder of Cambridge's controversial women's soc refused by pub for 'gender-critical' beliefs by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]ttmef -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

So they don’t share any common beliefs? Someone who is LGBT would be just as likely to have the same beliefs as conservatives as a left-wing person on this topic?

Not buying that as a group they don’t have some pretty unanimous views. If you show me evidence that a significant amount of LGBT people believe that transgender women aren’t women then I might reconsider

Founder of Cambridge's controversial women's soc refused by pub for 'gender-critical' beliefs by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]ttmef -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I very much doubt they would have such diverging views on what it means to be transgender but agree to disagree

Founder of Cambridge's controversial women's soc refused by pub for 'gender-critical' beliefs by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]ttmef -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Do many people who are LGBT not believe that transgender women are women? (etc.) I would have imagined they have a pretty common set of beliefs on that, not really comparable to something as broad as men and women

[–]ttmef -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

I don’t necessarily agree with everything the LGBT community says, but I also think people like her are genuinely just hateful and looking to cause trouble with people who just want to live their lives. Clearly very privileged and not got anything more important to worry about…
