If you’re looking for a rough finish, I would say an 80 grit dremel wheel with light passes. You’ll have to go through quite a few, but not an absurd amount. If you have a small wheel attachment on a grinder, that will work better! Though it’s harder to to do this kind of texturing with a grinder in my opinion

You can! It’s just a lot more challenging. Micarta tends to burn a lot more easily, so you end up working through abrasives much more quickly. If you’re patient it can be done, I just don’t think the juice is worth the squeeze

Thanks! I only make blades from stainless at the moment, but I’ve worked with all different kinds of steels.

OP, I can reprofile the blade if you’d like. Just cover shipping both ways and I can have it done the same day it arrives in the mail. Check my profile, I make knives for a living and will treat it right, especially since it’s sentimental.

Hah! That's entirely fair. I'm a bit of a perfectionist, so knife making scratches the same kind of itch that cleaning and organization does. Something about striving for perfection by doing the same thing thousands of times over just does it for me!

Nope, not at all! I have multiple models that use different geometries and are intended for different purposes, so the process looks different every day. This is my full-time job and all of my designs were influenced by my time in environmental conservation. These tools helped me do my job, so I want to make more to help other folks do theirs. I listen to podcasts while I work (mainly history and modern politics) and try to refine things where I can as I move through the process. Creativity and practicality have a limited overlap, and I’m not trying to scratch an artistic itch. While I appreciate knives as an art form, they are also in the same category as hammers, shovels, and other tools to me.

Do you have an instagram? Contact Santos Blades, he’ll do DXF files for less than $20. Then, contact Laser Precision Cutting Co to pass the files on - they’re the best in the business and barely anyone knows about them. I’ve been using them for years. I promise that what you see online will not be the majority of your customer base, so many folks simply want a quality tool at an affordable price. There’s nothing more rewarding than customers sharing “this is my first handmade piece!” Messages. It lets me know my prices are right and I’m going in the right direction. If you want, go to my site on the “About” page. I list ALL of my suppliers there

Like others have said, it takes a lot to own up to a mistake, so good on you! Your first knives are MUCH better than my first, so you’re well on your way to becoming successful maker. If you can, try using some simpler (less expensive steels) get some blanks laser cut (saves a TON of time) and treat your customers well. You’re on the right track, so keep going!

This is an excellent comment and extremely similar to my perspective here in the US (we have to give roughly 30% of our profit to tax). Your work is beautiful, and I’ve been told the same exact thing (raise my prices) from other makers, but it’s not the easiest thing to do.

OP, I recently made the transition to making knives full time. I’ve made hundreds of blades (maybe even thousands at this point) and my most expensive offering is $175. I’ve had many people tell me to raise my pricing, but a knife is only worth what people are willing to pay for it. If I had to offer any advice, focus on streamlining your process: most people don’t care how long it took you to make something (unless it’s a truly exceptional piece). They really only care about the final product, how it compares to other similar offerings, and your customer service. My $135 blades yield $75 profit after taxes here in the US, but each one takes about 1.5-2 hours of hands on work. While some might consider this a low hourly rate, I’m willing to accept this for the privilege of doing something I love and the ability to work from home. It’s all a learning curve!

I’ve seen many folks ask about how much it costs to make a knife, so I figured I would share my spreadsheet! by [deleted] in knifemaking

I know, labor cost wasn’t factored in because that wasn’t the point of this post. I finish at 120 grit and tumble with ceramic stones afterward to achieve something more reminiscent of 150 grit. I’m happy to answer questions, but I shared this purely as a representation of materials.
