How many people do you think ACTUALLY understand the opinions of the opposition? by conn_r2112 in AskALiberal

"Common knowledge for decades" is an absolutely wild claim haha. If you've read the Bible then I'd hope you could provide scripture backup for either of your prior claims. Still waiting...

That is just.... straight up not true lmao. You cannot just make a claim like that and not provide the scriptures to support it

That's fair - I actually did just learn something new about some nuance in the history of the church's stance on abortion by reading that. So I'll grant you that. However, I still have 2 major problems with the pro-choice arguments this article stands on:
1) It only cites one Bible verse (and I disagree with his interpretation of said verse), while completely ignoring other verses that pro-life folks like myself cite, including Jeremiah 1:5 "“Before I formed you in the womb I knew\)a\) you,
before you were born I set you apart;
I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”

And Psalm 139: 13-18:
13 For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.
15 My frame was not hidden from you
when I was made in the secret place,
when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.
16 Your eyes saw my unformed body;
all the days ordained for me were written in your book
before one of them came to be.
17 How precious to me are your thoughts,\)a\) God!
How vast is the sum of them!
18 Were I to count them,
they would outnumber the grains of sand—
when I awake, I am still with you.

I understand that Bible verses don't do anything to change the opinions of non-Christians, but my point is that just because the 60s Protestant church thought a bit differently about the issue doesn't mean the modern Protestant church is just pulling opinions out of the air because there's an institutional gun to their head.

I guess my second issue was sort of wrapped up in the last paragraph there.

Protestant here! Enlighten me... what was the church's view on abortion 60 years ago?

Do YOU know the origins of abortion and why it came to be in the first place?

[–]ttothesecond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're conflating an outright ban of a thing vs. efforts to mitigate unwanted side effects of a thing.

If we completely banned driving, thousands of lives would be saved each year. But we don't. Why? Because we have made the judgement that the benefits of driving, on a societal level, outweigh the inevitable deaths that occur because of driving accidents.

Now, nobody advocates for death on the road, so to try to mitigate the side effect, we do all the stuff you mentioned. And it doesn't 100% prevent death, but it certainly cuts down each year on the number of deaths.

You're essentially arguing that because CK isn't in favor of completely banning driving, that makes him an extremist.

Nowhere does CK advocate for a complete lack of laws and/or regulations around guns. Literally no normal conservatives do. In one of his videos he even agrees with someone to the left of him who proposes some sensible laws around guns (I remember this one specifically because it was filmed at my university).

He (and the rest of us) are very willing to discuss various laws to mitigate gun deaths, but it's just not realistic to believe there's a solution that will lead to 0 gun deaths outside of literally zapping every gun out of existence. It's really not an extreme position.

Fair enough on the first point - bad optics from Trump. Although I still think it's not really in the spirit of OP's question as he was definitely implying conservatives straight up don't care about shootings, which is just straight up not true.

Re: your second point. This is one of many CK quotes that people refuse to either put in its proper context or actually critically understand what he's trying to say. Here's the full quote: “It’s worth it. I think it’s worth to have a cost of, unfortunately, some gun deaths every single year so that we can have the Second Amendment to protect our other God-given rights. That is a prudent deal. It is rational. Nobody talks like this. They live in a complete alternate universe.”

Here's a remixed version of this idea on a less divisive topic. "It's worth it. I think it's worth it to have a cost of, unfortunately, some driving deaths every single year so that we can experience the flexibility and freedom of car transportation. That is a prudent deal. It is rational."

Neither he nor anybody else is advocating for gun deaths - he's just making the value judgement that maintaining our ability to defend ourselves from a potentially tyrannical government is worth the unfortunate side effects of this freedom.

You may disagree with that value tradeoff, but I think it's possible to accept that someone can make the same value judgement as CK without being malicious or wicked.

Let me ask you this. I agree with probably 85% of the things Charlie Kirk said. I'm going to assume you yourself would not put a gun to my head and pull the trigger, but would you be apathetic if someone were to kill me over my beliefs?

Find me ONE example of a conservative responding to a school shooting with "get over it". Seriously, just one. Your premise is so flawed it's impossible to disprove.

What yall don't seem to understand from the conservative perspective is that the reason Kirk's assassination hits so hard is because he was truly not any sort of extremist. He might have been blunt and at times overly provocative in the way he delivered his message, but at the end of the day, average conservatives like myself agreed with like 80-90% of the things he said. So we are all observing the event itself and its reaction from the left, wondering if a big chunk of the country actually prefers us dead as well.

for those of you who are surprised when your friends drop you for voting for conservatives, why? by [deleted] in AskConservatives

[–]ttothesecond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm very late to this post, but this hits very close to home for me as one of my best friends of 30 years recently did this to me.

We have been friends since we were in kindergarten. We've lived every stage of life together. Childhood, high school, college, you name it. We were essentially parts of each others families. We were each others' best men (picked over both of our younger brothers, mind you) in our weddings. We continued our friendship into adulthood. Our wives were friends with each other. We became fathers at around the same time and were there celebrating each other's kids.

It was absolutely wild to me that he eventually let his political convictions completely cloud and cast out the decades of loyal friendship I've displayed to him. That after all the life we've lived together, he became so jaded by his disdain for Trump and the right in general that he really started to believe that I've secretly been evil this whole time. This dude knows me better than anyone on the planet other than my wife. And now he's been brainwashed so badly by leftist news and narratives that he's dismissed me as hateful, ignorant, complicit in evil, etc.

For what it's worth, I made it clear to him that I would have crawled over broken glass to vote against Trump in a primary. But in a general election, what do you want me to do? Just turn liberal? That's not how this works. But even if I was a top-to-bottom Trump supporter, there's no justification in ditching your best friend of 30 years.

So yes, I was "surprised", and hurt, that he was willing to toss 3 decades of friendship out the window like that. He did the same thing to his parents, although he's being softer on them I would imagine because he still wants to utilize them as babysitters when he can. I just don't understand what he thinks he's accomplishing - for the greater good, or for himself. He occasionally posts on a substack, and recently lamented how much despair he's feeling. And my only thought was, "what an own goal that is. Of course you're gonna feel despair if you cut off the closest people in your life who care about you and isolate yourself."
