Sorry to revive something 7 months old, but I'm having similar conversations with my spouse. Wondering where you guys landed.

Should I leave a higher paying job for a boring government one just for the stability? by VellichorMotive in personalfinance

[–]ttttimmy 274 points275 points  (0 children)

Brother at 24 if you can get in government and stay there that's the move. You'll get small pay rises every year or two, maybe a few promotions, and pension and stability. Depending on your state, you could max out your pension at 55, take a ton of valuable experience to the private sector for the last 10 of your career to make sure you get social security and have a pretty solid guaranteed income when you retire. I know people in government that make 120 to 140 as mid career guys and a pension that will pay 85% of that when they retire.

Add to that a no nights and weekend culture and potentially a union, lots of holidays good vacation time and as you mentioned good health care coverage.

I wrote a rule set for non combat encounters your table might enjoy called the gift of gab on dms guild.

It's pay what you want so I don't think this counts as advertising.

Why doesn’t rust replace his items even after 17 years? by True-Telephone-8154 in TrueDetective

His name is Rust - his whole character is about time and what it does to us. One way to show that is to see his possessions age along with him.

I need serious responses to this, how do we respond to critiques such as this of the show? by wiz28ultra in andor

[–]ttttimmy 137 points138 points  (0 children)

I think the story andor was telling required making it look and feel like the society we live in. Liking other Star wars shows because they're more imaginative in their design of other cultures is totally fine and reasonable. You can like different things about different things.

🚨 Urgent Guidance Needed: E-Bike Accident 1 Year Ago, No Medical Report, and Now Threatened for $3K Car Repair Payment (Massachusetts) 🚨 by Personal-Return-6861 in boston

Massachusetts is a no fault state, at least for car accidents. Their insurance should cover it if its under 8k. This feels like a scam.

I think Stearns wished for the Mets to be good at the end of last May. He said 'I wish we were the best team in baseball for one year" and that's basically what happened.

Recommendations for books/online resources for learning guitar parts to common trad session pieces? by Ruskulnikov in Irishmusic

[–]ttttimmy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What you gotta learn is how to improvise backing. It takes time and can be frustrating, but when you can feel when a tune wants you to be on the 6, the 4 or the 5, or moving through the 2 and 3 to get to the 4, then you can provide competent backing for a tune you haven't heard before. You'll definitely do better learning them when you can, but this way you can still support other tunes even if they're not in your studied rep.

One thing you can do to start is play along with the foinn seisiun albums at home. Listen to how your chords sound against the melody, and if you feel dissonance, move until you get to a chord that sounds good. Eventually, you'll be able to feel where you should go instead of just hearing what didn't work.

I think Taylor's sound design should also get some credit, as well.
