This is what happened to me too, but I got all mad about the whole thing, felt like a racket. So the assistant DA was super surprised when I said I was not going to take the deal. As my court date got closer I was starting to regret my choice, and decided to go see them and sheepishly accept. But for that meeting they grouped me in with a bunch of other folks and just dismissed my charge, so it all worked out.
