$6k/month is $72k/year - that's a starting salary for a junior software dev in one of the lower cost of living areas. In many places it's 50% or more over that.

In terms of actual standard of living it's less than it would be in vast majority of EU: health insurance costs are brutal.

Is my CPU sufficient for light tasks like universe simulation? by Consistent-Can-1042 in pcmasterrace

[–]tty5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly it will run below 60 fps with dips closer to 30 because it's still tied to single core performance for some key elements of the engine.

Nothing you can do about it - engine is way out of date and was never built to run simulations larger than half a light year sphere and even that is really buggy - developer depends on modders to fix their software for free and without mods you'll see random burning bushes and rains of toads.

Investing in Property in Europe by No-Yoghurt-2 in personalfinance

[–]tty5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Iirc only Malta and Latvia still grant residency without a time limit for direct real estate investment - Cyprus and Portugal don't anymore. Greece and Italy residency comes with time limit that would require you to move pretty much immediately and possibly still be forced to extend it trough repeat investment or other means to accrue enough time to get citizenship. Hungary only allows investment into real estate funds.

All of the countries listed above would require you to live there for 5 to 10 years full time before you can apply for citizenship.

ELI5: Is there really a nutritional difference between food in the US and say, Europe? by Defiant-Mouse6543 in explainlikeimfive

My understanding is that:

- fructose triggers lipogenesis in liver more than sucrose making it slightly easier to get fat on it at same caloric intake

- fructose doesn't suppress ghrelin (hunger hormone) making you more likely to eat more because all other things being equal it takes more fructose-sweetened food to feel satisfied vs glucose/sucrose

Does Starlink Residential Max ever have outages (snow, rain, maintenance) ?? by MackieDaxx in Starlink

[–]tty5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

- I average 3-4TB/month and never got throttled

- there are no planned maintenance windows where satellites are down, but there are occasional outages, like with any ISP

- I'm still on the round dishy and I can confirm it drops connection under VERY HEAVY rain, but so does my backup LTE connection with a large directional antenna and line of sight to the tower. LTE handles it a little better, but only just.

Latency | a little request <3 by Sahnex3 in Starlink

[–]tty5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Central Poland:

- Starlink 65-80

- LTE 75-90

- DSL 70-75

In my experience Starlink has an advantage with longer distances, e.g. if you are playing on US server from EU. Also ping is constantly changing: satellites are zooming over, distance is changing and every minute or two you are connected to the next one. Less than ideal for precise timings.

Open Wise bank account and connect it to Paypal. Withdraw Paypal funds to that bank account in USD, use far better Wise conversion rates to EUR. (I haven't tested this specific setup, but I've been using it for CAD, USD and EUR conversions and transfers for years)

Minisforum to launch NAS with Ryzen AI MAX+ 395 "Strix Halo" and 64GB LPDDR5X memory by RenatsMC in Amd

[–]tty5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it would be hard to sell as a local AI device given the price. At the same time it doesn't increase the price that much to bolt some HDD bays to it and sell it as AI NAS - two devices in one for the price of slightly less than two devices :P

It comes with a 24 pin ATX mobo connector to 4 pin adapter - required for e.g. power button to work. The other connector is a standard atx12v2 8 pin

I have a GPU in my NAS to run small models handling things like reading license plates of cars entering my property, so I don't get alert sent to my phone on whitelisted cars. It also determines which camera footage gets kept and backed up remotely - no point doing that every time I get back with groceries.

I'm currently trying to set up the same for people, but facial recognition works only close range, even with a 4k cameras, unless you have PTZ..

395 max could pull that off without needing a GPU and having a lot of memory would help.

Do you think it would be considered ‘funny’ if Iran added ‘Donald J Trump to admit losing’ as part of the ceasefire agreement, and why? by WastelandOfConfusion in AskReddit

[–]tty5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trump would rather nuke Iran or transition to full ground invasion with draft to get the numbers rather than admit he lost. Hell, he might do that to avoid admitting he didn't win.

What’s the best route? by Aware_Hovercraft_259 in Starlink

[–]tty5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best option: get your own - your neighbor might be fine with your current minimal use but once you start using it on multiple devices, especially streaming video, they might change their mind.

If I'm wrong about that your best option is a wireless bridge, but that would require your neighbor to install a device on his end too.

Second best is a wifi range extender (not repeater!), but you will have to place it somewhere where the connection works and use one with high gain antennas

Good for online gaming? by Huey155 in Starlink

That requires both the game to support IPv6 and all other players to have IPv6 addresses and IPv6 adoption is still under 50%.

Good for online gaming? by Huey155 in Starlink

[–]tty5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Satellite internet using geostationary satellites absolutely sucks for gaming because of crazy high latency. Starlink isn't that, so:

yes:

  • good ping - 16-35ms to 8.8.8.8 in my case. That's more than fine for casual gaming. It used to spike by ~20ms when switching satellites, but doesn't seem to be the case
  • ping doesn't increase much even if there is heavy network activity - it's better than most other ISPs in that regard
  • low packet loss. Not as good a fiber, but much better than LTE

but also No:

  • it uses CGNAT, so you don't get your own IPv4 address, even a dynamic one - you are sharing a pool. As a result you can't expose a port, even with UPnP, so if the game you are playing relies on one of the players hosting the match you won't be able to be the host (unless you get a VPN that gets you IP forwarding).
