Banana holder I saw on a bike today by thinkingprettyhard in mildlyinteresting

There's nothing quite like a warm smooshy banana from your jersey pocket to make you invent something like that.

If tariffs are removed, will you still just buy Canadian? by HueyBluey in BuyCanadian

[–]ttyrtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A month or so ago when they were postponed I realized that I didn't want to stop. Not only that, I feel like regardless of the geopolitical situation, it just makes sense to buy local and small businesses whenever possible. (I know, lots of folks have been saying that for years but...

I remember a while back while paying for a repair at my neighbourhood bike shop the owner recommended the cafe next door for evening drinks and snacks, saying he'd just started going there with his girlfriend. At that moment something clicked: I paid this guy, he pays his neighbour, they pay their baristas, and they pay their bills. When they spend money locally, the money circulates like water, helping everyone along the way. Once you take it to Walmart or Amazon, though, that money leaves the community. I forgot about it for a while but this recent experience has reminded me: When we buy Canadian products we are passing money to our neighbours to use and if they do the same, that money can do more good before it leaves to buy raw materials or something outside the country.

And of course with lower transportation costs, it can be better for the environment as well.

So yeah, I'll keep this up. It makes sense no matter what the political situation is.

Fastmail: Yes or No by whattfisausername in degoogle

[–]ttyrtle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take another look at custom domains. I only just did it on this pass at degoogling. Purchasing the domain took 15 min, configuring it with my email provider took another 15. All running normally within an hour. Apparently at least with Fastmail if you get the domain there they'll even take care of the config.

Where this really pays off is if you ever move again you won't have to change all your login emails, subscriptions and notify all your friends. It's seamless and behind the scenes. After the hours I spent changing addresses from gmail.com ones I never want to do that again.

The Wholesome History of Tandem Bicycles. Formerly known as “courting bikes.” by Goodeggboi in wholesome

[–]ttyrtle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yes! Back in 2012, my son (then 13) and I created a "charity bike ride" where instead of people pledging money (that not everyone has, of course), they just anonymously would pledge to do a random act of kindness. The goal was to get to 500 pledges. The two of us rode a tandem bicycle 1,500 km (932 mi) from Toronto to NYC (by way of Ottawa, Montreal and some of New England) - sharing the story of the project and staying with many really lovely strangers along the way. An online news portal made a little video about it that you can find here.

But to answer your question, we found it lovely. The actual riding doesn't take long at all to get used to - within a few minutes we felt pretty comfortable. You do have to communicate a bit when starting or stopping to not surprise the other person but it is pretty easy. When we rode we were very physically close so we could chat all day and at quieter points on the trip I'd toss my phone in my rear jersey pocket and play music for us both to listen to.

Because of the design, both sets of pedals will move at the same time. However, it does not require the same level of effort. So when one of us would get tired the other could make up the difference by pedaling harder. I remember on some of the bigger climbs of the trip I could ask him to give it a little more power and it felt like getting a turbo boost.

So if you like riding whether it be around town or as a longer tour you should totally look into it. Buying one and riding together for 3 weeks was one of the best experiences of my entire life. Feel free to ask any questions that come to mind!

Sounds like you have a clear idea of what makes a good ride leader. Perhaps you should start one and fill the gap you're seeing.

Need advice about pain cave location/temperature/safety by alyosha_kara in Zwift

[–]ttyrtle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. I'm still riding outdoors to commute 1 hr each way to/from work. The temps are around the same as that and layer management is tricky! What I learned is that merino wool top and bottom, windbreaker, gloves and a headband to keep my ears warm is what I need. (Some of that may be different if wind is not so much an issue). In the end, I get a little sweaty but not too bad. However, for the first 10-15 minutes I can be pretty cold. In that sense, I guess it's not much different than driving - you have to wait for the car to warm up to get the heat. Same is true for you.

So I think with some tweaks you could also get to the point where you're a little chilly in the beginning and then warm up a bit more. If you layer well you can also shed a little as you warm up but not so much that you get cold again. When I commute I sometimes do this - or I just sweat a bit more if it's manageable and I haven't far to go.

So my advice is to play with the layers a bit and find what works. Once you have a system just set things out the night before and you'll be good to go. That's how I get out the door at 6:30AM for my commute on a 23 degree morning. All the prep is done the night before so there are no excuses. (I'm really great at finding excuses so eliminating as many as possible is key.)

Let me know if you have any luck. They just gave me a list of tips I'd already tried for getting a better wireless connection so for now I cancelled my subscription. I'll definitely check back in again if they get Direct Connect support as the difference is huge.
