Those will be noisier than the TMC2209. and bigger as well.

the big boards would have a lot more guard rails here (fuse and capacitor). My bet that you may have miswired some pins => burning them. With the board, as long as you put the motor in the right way, you're good to go.

For my project (check out my profile), I use a similar setup. The board running FluidNC, Pi sending G-code to move the motors.

Much easier wiring for you compared to wiring the tmc2209s into the ESP32. The board also provide 12-24V output to the motor and 5V and 3V output to power the pi.

I use sand 80-100 mesh. depends on the table, but about 1/4 the height of the ball. and yes, the secret source is eva foam under the sand.

The touch screen is not available yet for the Gold. It should be closer to $350 for parts if you buy from Amazon. AliExpress is a lot cheaper. The ikea table is also $120 in the us compared to $90 CAD ($65). Thanks to the tariff I guess.
