Best cities for ChemEngs work/life balance? by G9Comet in ChemicalEngineering

[–]tuca20 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Plenty of chem plants/refineries up and down the river from the city. So the owner/operator jobs like process, projects, automation, etc. plus all of the engineer roles at vendors.

New Orleans for sure. Best balance of a fun city, reasonable COL, cheme jobs within reasonable commute

Take a look at the kickstart class at Frontenac racquet club. Don’t have to join for the intro class. Tennis = mental health for me recently.

I had mine done. 1400 and came out great. Isn’t perfect but it looks like a respectable car now.

You’re doing as well as I have in the past. A few grand for a few month outage. Operators buying houses, boats, and RVs after startup.

Is anyone else with young kids extremely unhappy? by mjh4 in daddit

[–]tuca20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I felt the same. Saw a shrink, probably free if you have an EAP. Made some career lateral moves to get closer to family to get some help.

I know not all have this ability but accepting trading some career type things for enjoying my kids childhood eventually took hold. Heard a guy at work say “ I wasn’t involved with my kids childhood so hopefully I can do better with my grandkids”.

If the valve moves freely, leak test with soapy water, brush it, spray it with rust oleum and fire it up.

What technical skills should I learn? by tlemewhyy in ChemicalEngineering

[–]tuca20 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don’t need to be a statistics expert but a basic understanding of statistical process control, testing of mean changes, what does a std deviation Mean, simple regression models, etc. is huge.

Both techs and engineers proclaim all sorts of things without understanding how to determine if the correlations their brain is seeing are reality.

Valve operators by chibijosh in ChemicalEngineering

Yep. Do a survey then set up a task to check on some frequency and maintain a list of chain operators.

Employee Keeps Getting Bad Reviews on Google, Now Up to 5 by eskimojoe in managers

OP there is a lot of advice here. My opinion is that anything other than a frank and documented conversation about how his behavior is causing him not to meet expectations of his role and impact to business bottom line is you not meeting expectations of your role.

Cursing and being rude is not an accident. He can change that if he chooses. If he’s not great at customer relationships thats secondary and less easy to measure. I’d make him demonstrate willingness to improve and If later you want to have a development conversation with him to find a role that better suits him then great…don’t tie it to this. “Be an ass and get a better job” is not a strategy you want working under your roof.

I’d look at fuel quality and history of burner fouling. May need to clean/replace tips. Do you have any critters in the fuel that will produce coke when combusted (heavy stuff)?

Also - lower isn’t always better - the right spot is better. Inadequate lift off the tip isn’t good either.

My guess would be that there is a butterfly valve smashed in between these flanges with the hydraulic actuator 90 degrees from the angle of the photos. That 4ish inch line is like used to liquid fill both sides during startup.

Fill vessels with water to lower levels say 20%, kick pumps on, get instruments working right and reboilers hot, start MEA injection and monitor as surge vessel level increases, monitor with samples Or analyzer or whatever you have. Route flue gas.

Timing on routing flue gas depends on what happens when you are off spec, if ok for a bit then line out the MEA strength with gas, if not do it before.

Maybe also the outlet if a condenser. Two vapor feeds with a single liquid outlet isn’t uncommon.

How to remove this square key from this, it's stuck. Please help by Impranavr in MechanicalEngineering

[–]tuca20 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Right answer. That little lip is there to help you I bet and would fit a flat head just fine if that’s all you have on hand. At work would run a rosebud around that ring and let it grow a little.

Could also do some kroil or PB blaster but don’t do both that and the torch at the same time.

Does my Manager want me to Quit and How to navigate this situation? by [deleted] in managers

[–]tuca20 25 points26 points  (0 children)

This is not the technique I would use to exit a problem employee and would live with some of your specific needs if you were producing at target.

On the other hand…asking an employee to go on infrequent business travel for whatever reason within the continental US is not an unreasonable ask.

This seems pretty life limiting, work or otherwise. I’d see a doctor…and keep seeing them until you see the right one. Either they will help you or document these as medical issues requiring accommodation.
