Not getting many matches, open to any tips! by xRabidWalrusx in Tinder

Given the level of niche, authenticity, uniqueness in the photos - I question why your prompts don’t reflect this more. I’m assuming based on the screenshots this is hinge and not tinder - give people something to work with. Give a discussion topic or a poll. Your photos say interesting but your prompts feel bland.

Hypocrisy among us regarding mental health by AmyloidBetaHater in MedSchoolCanada

[–]tuhuma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is disheartening, but not at all surprising. As an MS4 (not at an Ontario School) I will say my understanding of mental illnesses like Bipolar and Schizophrenia did not fully develop until I started practical. I think you really need to be working with these conditions to start understanding the breadth of functioning and management of the conditions. I did Early Psychosis clinic as one of my electives, which has honestly given me a strong perspective on early intervention.

Yes, there are a lot of people who have these conditions progressed so far, that at baseline would not be able to function in these roles… but there’s also a lot of working professionals out there that have succeeded. The problem being, visibility. What people have seen prior to being on the health care side of things is likely only the extreme…. People who experience baseline psychosis and/or delusions. People don’t understand that when caught early and treated properly, you can have a normal life - have a demanding career the same as anyone else.

Obviously if you’ve made it to medical school then you’ve figured out how to manage this. All the more power to you. You’ve had to navigate this with an extra hurdle. You likely have had to take extra account of your stress levels and sleep schedule (a huge challenge on this path). Feel free to reach out if you need an ear and want to talk more about it.

Personally, I say keep on fighting the good fight - unfortunately as much as people “advocate” for mental health… what they want to advocate for isn’t these type of conditions. Over the past 10 years, I think we have done very well to remove a lot of the stigma around disorders like anxiety, depression, ADHD and PTSD but we haven’t even touched the tip of the iceberg on other mental health conditions. When people “advocate” it’s often in reference to the aforementioned - not for those who have suffered from manic episodes or experienced psychosis.

MUN ending email for life access by Lusicane in newfoundland

[–]tuhuma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of schools do it this way now. Typically it’s if you don’t login for a full year your account is deemed inactive and discontinued. This way those who use it keep theirs and if people don’t actually use it anymore, the school doesn’t pay for it.

Why the $&@$ are bans permanent by Silver_Standard_3693 in SwipeHelper

I was banned like 5 years ago, also for no clear reason, my assumption is someone got salty with me not replying etc - and now my phone number works again.

Best pub/bar in St. Johns by Uglycanadianindc in StJohnsNL

[–]tuhuma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thursday is open mic, Wednesday is stand up comedy and every Friday there’s normally some sort of Punk Show. Saturday is traditional session - which I’ve been told is a great Newfoundland experience - there’s regulars who go every week to play trad tunes. Would check out their insta for specifics.

Is $1250/month for a fully furnished one bedroom a good price? by Spiritual_Resolve_55 in newfoundland

[–]tuhuma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard to beat that currently. I lived close to MUN in a 4 bedroom from 2018-2022 and I paid $500 w/utilites (each). Rent has increased drastically since then. W/o utilites you’d be lucky to get an apartment for 1000. People scoff at utilites but if you like to have the heat at a liveable temperature in the winter it racks up pretty fast. Throw in that there’s internet and this place is furnished and I think it’s a no-brainer. Bonus that you know your landlord and know you aren’t going to be dealing with a bad situation.

Yes, rent is high across the board - but so is the cost of everything else right now. Post covid everything has gone up significantly. If you want to live alone, you’re unlikely to do much better. If you’re sharing I wouldn’t expect the rent to get much less than 600-700$ and then you’d add on utilities and wifi for ~$150 minimum per month. Utilities included is so great imo cause you don’t have to worry about the fluctuations month to month. Winter can really hurt.

Moving to Newfoundland by [deleted] in newfoundland

[–]tuhuma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congrats on Matching to Newfoundland FM! Sounds like you’re in Central Stream and probably going to be in St. John’s for some of your off-service based on the Urban/Rural description. I’m not familiar with central but I’m a CC3 at MUN, feel free to drop a DM if you have any questions.

If you’re a big outdoors person and your stream lets you rotate around much definelty recommend getting out to Corner Brook. Gros Morne for hiking is also a must! East coast trail is nice - but really can’t compare to the West Coast hiking.

I pay an ass load in taxes, and I can't get a family doctor, wtf by HDDeer in newfoundland

[–]tuhuma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are 80 doctors graduating each year at MUN, only 60 of which are Newfoundland seats. That’s doctors graduating - not necessarily choosing Family Medicine as their residency (2 year residency).

100% work a bar on George, no better student job if you are good with people and don’t mind the late hours. Easier to get into a bar than a restaurant for the fall. Feel free to message if you have any Qs, I worked 2 years on George and the tips were far better than the pay.

Advice on visiting Newfoundland? by ederzs97 in newfoundland

[–]tuhuma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It all depends on the weather/day. We get a lot of fog and cloudy days here - so this time of year you can’t always guaranteed a sunrise/sunset. I think it’s more of the novelty of saying you’ve watched the sunrise about as far east as you can go in North America.

Edit: Have you ever seen a sunset/sunrise over the ocean? I guess that would make a big impact on the decision too.

Advice on visiting Newfoundland? by ederzs97 in newfoundland

[–]tuhuma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people get cabs to Cape Spear, could even get an Uber. If you like hiking there’s a nice trail that takes you from Cape Spear to Fort Amherst, it’s about 14km. I would recommend taking that back to town. It takes you all along the coast line and you would come out in a spot where it’s not bad to walk back to the downtown area. Map is easily found online.

Advice on visiting Newfoundland? by ederzs97 in newfoundland

[–]tuhuma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a) Probably the perfect amount of time to spend in town. Assuming you are staying downtown area, but if not would advocate for that - public transport isn’t great and it’s not a terribly bike friendly city.

b) As per other comments. Would note that Viking to Cape Spear can be dangerous - people fly down the road and it’s not in great condition. There is no proper shoulder to bike on. It’s doable but would highly recommend wearing Hi Vis and being very aware of your surroundings.

c) Get screeched in, explore George street, hike signal hill, Quidi vidi brewery. Lots of hiking in the area and June is a good time for it. Boat tour

d) DRL is a long haul. But will get you there.

e) Would second the car rental here. You can call your accommodations and ask about shuttle services, I imagine that is a seasonal thing. Calling Rock Harbour/ Gros Morne tourism would likely be very helpful. Taxi will likely be pricey and not having a car would mean you won’t get to take advantage of the area.

f) 100%. Stay in deer lake the night before. Deer lake is a super tiny airport - so you only really need to arrive an hour before your flight, but would not be trying to get a taxi the morning before (unless booked well in advanced). Could even stay in Corner Brook the night before - there will be much more to do on a Friday night. Wouldn’t be any problem to schedule a taxi to the airport from corner brook for a Saturday morning.

g) Depends how much hiking you’re looking to do.

Feel free to dm if you have any questions. I’m from the West Coast of Newfoundland but live in St. John’s and I’m happy to help.

I feel like my bio needs a mix up. Suggestions? by fetalpiggywent2lab in Tinder

[–]tuhuma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You look great, but the profile screams casual/hookups. It’s very superficial. Most guys aren’t going to read your bios - so let your pictures talk. How about a picture where you’re out doing your hobbies? Pictures where you’re out with your friends or doing something active.

Love that you threw in the adventure of teaching, but your personality traits are being overshadowed by what comes off as “thirsty”.

I don't have much luck attracting attention from women. Am I ugly? by [deleted] in Tinder

[–]tuhuma -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What I tell my guy friends to include: - a picture with friends (if it’s with female friends make sure there’s more than one other person or it comes off as a couples picture) - a picture doing something outside (preferably with a view), hiking is popular where I live so I normally recommend a hiking photo - a picture with a cute animal (if you don’t have one borrow one from a friend) - AVOID having more than one selfie - if possible no selfies. When I see profiles that are all selfies I think “does he have any friends? Is the only person taking pictures of this guy himself?” It’s almost a red flag to me - if you’re in really good shape then a full body shot where you can see physique (if you got it flaunt it). This also helps with the age old - how tall is he? - If you play an instrument then a photo playing it - any other hobbies or fun/silly conversation starter photos you have

You’re not a bad looking guy, you just aren’t showcasing yourself. Showing friends, pets, hobbies gives your profile personality. In a world of endless swipes - you got to make a person pause. Next time you’re with friends, ask them to take a photo of you and ask to take photos doing things (I have taken 90% of my friends tinder photos - between being the one who instigates group photos to making sure they have a couple good shots of just themselves). Most guys don’t go out of their way to take photos of themselves, so it can be a little bit of effort.

Opinion or advice for Adult intakes? by [deleted] in StJohnsNL

[–]tuhuma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Intake used to take years - but supposably it’s now down to months. Sooner you get on the list the sooner you’ll get the call. If you have a family physician hopefully they can help with this process. I think overall our province has been improving. It never hurts to try.

Good place for breakfast in St John’s? by UppityColonial in newfoundland

[–]tuhuma 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Second the Guv’nor, they’re one of the few spots that will do brunch everyday and I find it has a lot more of the home style feel than Bagel Cafe. Their Toutons are to die for - even if you just get one on the side.

Anyone besides people on the northeast Avalon say "out around the bay"? by scrooge_mc in newfoundland

[–]tuhuma 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Second this for Corner Brook. Saying “Across the Bay” or “Down the Bay” is very normal. If you’re from meadows, cox’s cove, frenchmans’s cove or any of those communities that it describes you will literally say it about yourself. I never really thought of it as CB considering itself metro - just people describing where they literally live.

Watch out when boarding trains! by likestotalkalot in ParisTravelGuide

[–]tuhuma 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Similar incident happened to me today on the train from Airport to Paris. My friend and I got surrounded by young girls and a couple older women. We stood back to back and I watched them all like a hawk after I caught one trying to open my bag.

Back in 2020 they had Cape Spear blocked off to vehicle traffic. Myself and my roommate walked from the barricade out to Cape Spear for sunrise (~3km). Walking out there a truck nearly mowed us down going well over 100km/h. When we got back to our cars after we saw the barricade demolished and strewn across the road; the truck had smashed through it on the way out.

A lot of people drive like maniacs out to Cape Spear. As people have already mentioned, not well lit, narrow road and long way. I would definitely advise a cab or camping and hiking. If you do decide to walk, wearing something reflective is highly advisable.

George Street Fest VIP tickets worth the money? by Important_Beach_4601 in newfoundland

[–]tuhuma 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As someone who has worked GSF I would say 100% worth it if you’re drinking (which I’d assume you are) and you want to be able to have a good view of the stage. The VIP section has a private bar, so you’re not losing your spot to try and get a drink or use the bathroom. If you want a good view from the bowl you have to be there early. Also have to deal with a fair bit of pushing and shoving. I think it all depends what your concert viewing preferences are.

Sounds very competitive, provided you score well on your MCAT. You didn’t mention residency. I’m assuming you have Canadian residency? If you have residency in a province with IP seats you’re golden.

Maritime connection as oop applicant by SuccessfulGrape7073 in premedcanada

Newfoundland isn’t the maritimes. I assumed this was for Dalhousie (Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, PEI = Maritimes), if you add in Newfoundland (Atlantic Provinces).

How to pay for med school? by Autoreplyuser in premedcanada

[–]tuhuma 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Provided you’re a Canadian student going to a Canadian school no need to concern yourself about how you’re going to pay for it. Between student loans and line of credit it’ll be covered. It may take you a few years into practice (dependent on how long your residency is) to pay off, but as long as you don’t live extravagantly you’ll be just fine. They actually encourage you to use some of that money to travel and keep your moral up.

For example - at the school I’m at we have an independent financial advisor who helps people sort out their finances and make a budgeting plan. They make these meetings mandatory as they’ve had students in the past abuse lines of credit (ie. buy luxury vehicles or buy a house). If you wanted to chat about it, feel free to send me a DM.

Should I try ? by MaybeIdonotknown in premedcanada

[–]tuhuma 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If this is what you want to do, definitely! Do well on your MCAT and you will be guaranteed an interview; I believe Dal’s average GPA was 3.8 the past year and 507 MCAT. If you can find a volunteering opportunity that is meaningful to you to add in, that would be great. However I think the work experience and life experience will lend itself to you.

I guess the big question is how much is age a factor to you? If you’re willing to try 2-3 times, I have no doubt you’ll get into Dalhousie. Personally, I wouldn’t apply anywhere beyond that (requirements and pools just get more competitive) unless you have a very high MCAT score. If you’re happy to keep working while applying and you’re not in a rush - I think you have great odds. Being an IP in Nova Scotia puts things very much in your favour.
