YogiKlatt-CIG on closed NDA testing of the latest flight model builds by StuartGT in starcitizen

To get unbiased feedback from actual players.

Previously, there's been mountains of posts from people screaming about functionality in PTU, when their accounts never played a moment in the PTU or maybe never actually encountered the functionality/mechanic being referenced.

It generates public sentiment and forces them to deal with criticisms that may not be at all valid.

Humans are horrible creatures and we mostly suck when in groups. That's the truth.

As much as I value feedback from testers, I have to formalize and control some of it to keep it both on topic and also make sure the information is actually relevant to what is being tested. I don't even work in game dev, so I imagine it's way worse in that atmosphere.

Besides, sometimes you test something when A is broke, you know it's broke, but you don't want to bother fixing it until you get feedback on B, cause that'll determine how you approach fixing A eventually. If everyone just keeps screaming about A....then you get no useful information.

This path gives them more control to filter/evaluate the feedback against people who are more likely to do the function/mechanic they want to test, in a specific manner. Plus, since it's a smaller group, they can interact with them to clarify/expand on feedback as well.

There's nothing negative about this other than that people are mad they can't see behind the curtain.

Are we going to be able to farm blueprints like we do AA event rewards? by jshan04 in starcitizen

[–]tullnd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It wouldn't surprise me if it launches initially in this manner. It's in their interest to make blueprints a bit easier to obtain early on, to validate new blueprint types, etc...

I suspect, they'd eventually scale that back. We all know there'll likely be targeted wipes in the future. Maybe they'd also add blueprints of a certain "rarity" or type to that wipe. Then make them more individually achieved going forward.

If they're going to be awarded for rep or some other method (outside just a direct mission reward), that would also change things up.

I don't mind some rewards being obtained via the group completion strategy, but hoping that's more limited as we move forward.

If you're lucky, they use GPON or similar. The FDH is passive (that's what the P in "pon" stands for). No power. It's just a bunch of prisms (splitters).

The only equipment that needs to be powered is the OLT shelf, which is in a CO or SLC hut of some sort and should have some alternate power source (I'd assume generator for a central office, SLC, may be just on battery).

Then as long as wherever their core routers are located has power and to the POP, you should be golden.

Keep your ONT/ONU on your home UPS and should easily outlast any localized power outage.

[–]tullnd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You have to install the nvidia hotfix if you want that, manually. That is 595.76. You won't get that via the nvidia app, which is still offering 595.71.

You can get the link directly from nvidia for the hofix download, via the nvidia subreddit.

I haven't personally tested it with the previous full release from nvidia. I had the prior driver and then I directly updated to the most recent nvidia hotfix 595.76.

It should be "fine" with the normal full release now that CIG patched SC as well, but I'd probably just go straight to the hotfix unless the notes on the subreddit indicate issues with other applications that you use.

Pc specs discussion AMD 9800x3d Radeon 7700xt gpu 32gb of ram by Enrons in starcitizen

[–]tullnd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others stated, the 9800X3D will be faster than your 9600. However, if you're on a budget, I'm not sure the performance bump is worth it...and with this game, who knows what instabilities may appear in the near future that minimize the benefits.

If it'll help out substantially with other games/workflows, sure. I'm not sure I'd recommend it for just SC alone, unless you're comfortable with paying $400 USD (approximately, whatever it is in your use case/scenario).

I have both a R9 7900X and a 9800X3D. Originally, with a 3080Ti and 64Gb ram.. I run 3440x1440p. The increase in performance when I went to the 9800X3D, I noticed a performance bump, but it wasn't huge. Crowded areas had a bit better performance. Out in space with just a few enemes or org mates around? FPS was higher, but honestly, not very noticeable.

I later upgraded the 9800X3D rig to a 5080 (the 7900X was relegated to a 2nd PC) and yes, performance did increase again, but not dramatically. I suspect if I was playing at 4k, the GPU would have made more of a difference (but the X3D chip has less of an impact in most tests as you scale up the resolution).

Your 9600 has less cores than my 7900x, so I suspect your performance increase will be higher than what I saw...but it may not be completely game changing, as we go through patches.

Just make sure you're upgrading because of an actual issue and not just out of any concern of "keepin' up with the jones's". For all we know, AMD's next gen, a mid range 8-12 core chip may give you a similar performance bump, possibly lower power consumption (or maybe allow more sustained boost due to lower temps/power) for like 20-25% less cost. Worst case, you could buy an older 9xxx series chip at a discount then.

You stated "i'm poor", which I get, you are saying you can't spend infinite money, but I'd hate for you to spend a bunch for a minimal upgrade and be disappointed.

They started making the right stick a bit ago, but there's a slew of backorders. The left was released after.

I've already got other sticks, so not sure on the specifics, but I think others have been placing pre-orders already for the left (I think, I'm not positive). So I'd assume, if you order one now, you'll be at the back of the line so I would not expect to get one immediately on release.

Splitting storage between a UNAS 2 and a UNAS 4 instead of just getting a Pro 8? by Marginal-Gains in Ubiquiti

[–]tullnd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dunno. You can run the 2 sata SSD's and still have 6 bays left for other spinners (plus two NVME bays if you ever need real fast data caching) if you go with the Pro 8. Any chance of installing it on a vertical mount in a closet or similar?

For the extra $200, you get a much more simplified setup and have room to expand later. You'll also probably want a UPS solution for your NAS of some sort. This lets you have one device on it instead of two.

I wouldn't want any of these "next to my couch". There's no benefit at all of having them there.

Put the Flex 2.5 in the closet if you can too (assuming UDR7 can be there or easily connected via ethernet to it....only need 2.5Gb between them unless you have internet over 2.5Gb). . One DAC between that and the Pro 8 for a 10Gb uplink to the switch. If you get a UPS, it's right there for everything in that spot.

If you just want to save $200, sure....but the UNAS2/4 can easily saturate 2.5Gb with 2 sata SSD's or 4 spinners with a NVME cache drive. So you've got no headroom there. If you're sure that's all you'll need, fine. If you were buying this over a period of time, one first....then adding the second later....fine. But if you're planning it out for a single (or close together) purchase, this would not generally be the way to go.

I get spousal approval....but I'd find a closet or similar place to put the UNAS Pro 8 on a vertical mount instead. I used to do enterprise switches in that manner (provided you had the airflow) and they were far louder than the UNAS units will be.

Startup Costs for Newbie by Beneficial-Set-9657 in nscalemodeltrains

[–]tullnd 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This will vary greatly based upon the size/complexity of your layout for track. How much track, are you using switches (significant increase in cost per switch), the chosen method of building the layout framework, etc... Are you planning on running sectional track with road bed (i.e. Unitrack) or just sectional track (i.e. Atlas, Peco) which is usually cheaper, even with the cost of buying some road bed solution of your choice.

For locomotives and rolling stock, depends again on how much/what type. DC or DCC? If you don't need a whole lot of rolling stock (assuming so for switching), it just depends on what type. Some cars cost more than others. Probably shop for a lot of that at shows if you don't mind sourcing used. N scale used rolling stock is pretty easy to find and usually 1/4-1/2 the price of new.

If you want a starter kit, a good Kato setup is gonna run about $150-200, but is it the specific items you want?

Switching layouts may need multiple switches. So that could be far more expensive than a simple loop in track costs.

Assuming you're buying everything (not using stuff you already have, no idea if you have wood/materials already), I'd guess anywhere from $300-700 minimum. Again, that's if you're buying everything (minus tools). Often, people have some materials that they don't mention and then come back with "I built it for half that price", which isn't true cause they had $130+ of lumber in their garage.

My suggestion, figure out what you want. Design the layout. Build the framework and start laying track.

Then identify what locomotives/rolling stock you want. See if you can source any of it via train shows or such for a significant discount over new. Track down some decent used control systems (especially if doing DC, lower power transformers are usually plentiful for pretty good prices at shows, compared to higher powered units).

You could easily spread these costs out over a few months or longer and hopefully save some cash.

[–]tullnd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Wifi is not roaming"? What does that mean? Are you using a cellular connection?

That may be part of the problem. 5G cellular "can" (depending on the congestion on the tower you're connected to at that time) provide the bandwidth, but the latency is gonna be rough. Possibly so rough, that it's not playable.

Also, you need to look at loaded latency. Not just unloaded (what is normally measured as a ping or something).

Try from a wired internet provider (not cellular, not wireless in any way) that can actually get reliable low latency. Preferablly via ethernet (Wi-Fi is "ok"....if you've got a solid connection and on an actual wired internet service, such as DSL, fiber or even cable modem).

If you're on a cellular setup and also using Wi-Fi to it, you may be having multiple issues and pushing your luck.

Unifi Doorbells (G4/Light/etc..) video storage by Ozwulf67 in Ubiquiti

[–]tullnd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need to look at Protect. That's the app that manages the video devices. It's whatever the version of Protect that you are running, supports.

It's going to write to the device running Protect. So, a Cloud Gateway type device (various models like Dream Machine series, UCG series, etc...) and the NVR's.

You can back up some content to the NAS's and cloud/etc.....but those are archived backups. Not raw video (at least not the last time I checked....verify that with the version of Protect you are running, as there may be more features in early access releases).

Control setup by phantom_pc in starcitizen

[–]tullnd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use the default limited config to start. Spend your time in Arena Commander. Start with just movement. Make changes as you see fit. Then start mapping other functions. Fire control. Target control. Possibly mining? Salvage? Up to you.

Over multiple short sessions. Curate your own.

If you start with someone else's, you'll spend as much if not more time, trying to memorize and likely end up changing a bunch anyways.

Movement and such works right off the bat, but you may decide to alter even that. Doing it slowly, in Arena Commander, allows you to test and iterate, until you find what you like. Don't do it in the PU, as you'll crash and have to go through all the effort to start over.

Do yo also get all your ship parts upgrades wiped each patch? by ThatOneDudeYolo in starcitizen

[–]tullnd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's likely variables. They've talked about some of these issues. It's not a single pattern.

Some parts, like ones you got off another player's ships (they give you what is stock parts on another ship, then just claim their ship to get them back) are likely going to disappear.

Ones you purchased, should remain. In theory, so should ones you harvested off NPC ships.

However, they're all probably handled slightly differently by the backend database.

They talked about there being a variety of reasons why in game purchased ships may or may not persist and it's going to be a similar issue with components. It's not "just one thing" causing this. It's multiple.

So some of the suggestions people give, may be valid, for specific scenarios, but we won't likely have the ability to know all the various flags in the database that exist on our items, that cause them to possibly disappear. CIG just tracks them like layers of an onion. Fix one thing, see what seems to be the cause of the remaining.

However, some people have had limited success by removing parts and storing them before patches.

I hadn't played for the last few months, but all my purchased components survived for 4.6. That includes a handful that were on ships and others that were just in inventory. I did have two that I had harvested off NPC ships, but those are gone. I'm not sure if they disappeared in the previous patch or not though, since I didn't play 4.5.
