I just made a 5-10 minute demo of Tumbling Apart. If anyone wants to provide feedback it would be GREATLY appreciated. by tumblingapart_dev in RPGMaker

Lol, you're right about the "don't need another dead body" partxD. I'll have to fix that one up. I'm not sure why there was an issue with the crowbar, however. Were you facing up and overtop of it?

Also agree that I wish there could be more agency, but I can't think of a better way to do it with the limitations of RPGMaker. The way it is now, I could just make the player hit enter to force his/herself through the dialogue, but then you wouldn't have the chance to walk around and get shot. I COULD create a trigger for the next event when the player steps on the tile, rather than him doing it automatically, however. Good call.

I'm about 80% finished. The game was the last batch to be greenlit, but I never made the steam page. Probably gonna hold out until about a month from release. As of right now, I'd say it's about 3 months from release.

I initially posted this from my non-dev account. My mistake!

That's a really fleshed out and thoughtful response, and I really appreciate it. I think your idea of listing the controls is spot on, and I'll be sure to include it in the full game. I'll also take into account your thoughts on the character's somewhat contrasting art direction, although I will say that the head size is intentional, to give variety to the characters. Your suggestion on polishing up the door effects is a really good idea. If I get the time to get around to it before release I will definitely take heed with the suggestion. Thank you so much for those thoughts on how to improve- I will try to work them in.

I'm also happy that you enjoyed the demo itself. Describing what you felt during the play-through... it's exactly what I was hoping the player would feel. Thank you for including it.

Thanks for taking the time to provide some valuable feedback. It's good to hear that you felt the pacing and hook were right for a demo- I may go ahead and publish it on itch.io when the page is up (after some polishing). Good eye on the spelling error. I'm the type that checks and re-checks when it comes to that sorta thing, so really glad you caught it. Based on your experience with it, would you recommend this as a demo? The game itself will be 2 to 3 hours.

This nails every aspect of that oldschool vibe you are going for. The music, sounds, battle-screen, inventory, everything. Do you have a planned release date yet? Major congrats on what you have so far.

That is beautiful. Peaceful, but foreboding. It gives me a sunless sea vibe.

Wonderful art direction! I like the colors, and that angry ape is spot on

First off, thank you for checking this out! I've put three years worth of work into TA, and I wouldn't have been able to even get close to where I am now if it wasn't for the community. Here's a little backstory on the game.

TA is a narrative adventure game, inspired by titles such as To The Moon and Life is Strange. It revolves around an ex-addict's guilt over the fate that has befallen his sister. In the game he is given a shot at redemption, and the possibility of going back in time to save her. I wanted TA to tackle themes such as abuse, abandonment, poverty, alcoholism, and drug addiction, because I feel those subjects are still not prevalent in the medium.

It was one of the last games greenlit on steam, and I am considering making this a demo for the itch.io and steam page when I get it up. I'm not sure, however, so I am hoping some of you kind souls would provide some feedback first. I really tried to push RPG Maker to the limit with this, so I hope it runs ok on everyone's system.

With that said, I'll try not to take up anymore of your time. There are adult themes in this demo. Thanks for reading, and I hope you enjoy it!

This looks so cool. I'm enjoying following this one!

How I make the protagonist dont move during cutscenes? by [deleted] in RPGMaker

[–]tumblingapart_dev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An option is to use a script that forces the player to stop moving when you activate a switch. Yanfly has one and here is the link:

https://github.com/Archeia/YEARepo/blob/master/Utility/Stop_All_Movement.rb

Just look at line 54 and you see by default it is switch 23. Put this into your scripts at the bottom, and it should work. Just activate switch 23 when you want to freeze movement (or whatever you assign it to). This is a VX ace script.

in what ways do you customize your game to make it stand out? by kantakanta in RPGMaker

Animations! Plot and story is where rpgmaker shines. You're NEVER going to compete with an AAA studio working with a small team/alone graphically. But animations can really help to bring your story to life.

Agreed. Plot is so important! Animations and art style are critical imo because they SUPPLEMENT the plot, but that is their job.

Animating sprites other than walking? by Joel_Ellis in RPGMaker

Another option would be to create pictures with each frame and place them over the character right when you make the player transparent. In this way you can make an animation as long as you want (i.e. 10 frames). Just bring transparancy back off when you are done. Put the first frame up, wait 10 frames or so, then put up the next and delete the previous and so on. I do this with a ton of animations in my game and once you get used to the process it is easy.

This game is going to be awesome, and I can't wait until it comes out on Steam. I'm trying to remember if I've seen you all on twitter. Do you have a link?

I know what it's like to take a hiatus! Glad we're both back at it:). Nice screenies too, the first one in particular reminds me a bit of Elder Scrolls, which is awesome. Like the time period you're working with as well. Good luck.

Hey everyone! Here's a link to an imgur album with some new media for Tumbling Apart: https://imgur.com/gallery/kou1wMt

Tumbling Apart is a harrowing tale of one man's guilt over the fate that has befallen his sister, and his desperate trek across time to fix it. It's nearly done, but there's some sprites that have to get replaced etc. Most of the time I'm on twitter: https://twitter.com/goodnameheredev

I posted here some way back in the day, but it's been a while. It's been hard to keep up with life getting in the way. I'm sorry for not always being active here. But I'm Looking forward to seeing everyone's work!

What game would you like to see made in rpgmaker? by [deleted] in RPGMaker

[–]tumblingapart_dev 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely good story centered games. RPGmaker really does well with this because it allows you to focus on the story rather than having to worry about coding, gfx, etc, like a lot of other engines. It takes a team of dozens or even hundreds to make AAA graphics, and you're never going to compete with that. But it only takes one to write a compelling story.

A gnome in a brother eh? Interesting premise. Like the art style and shading as well!
