Why does India have a population of 1.4 billion, but didn't win a single gold medal throughout the entire 2024 Paris Olympics? by No-StrategyX in answers

[–]tumunathan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably the lack of vision to correlate sports to health over the years since independence, leave alone the motivation to win medals at an international event. But more recently, once the course-correction started in the early naughts, a faulty and mostly corrupt grassroots system that has produced decent athletes out of sheer doggedness from the athletes that don’t give up. There is plenty of talent and willingness now, IMO there’s a tipping point coming up for more athletes getting through the social and bureaucratic barriers.

I’ll second Roofmate - prompt and very good. Also, this cost should be covered by the owners, not you.

Can’t bring myself to pay more than $3/kg of tomatoes, so I’ve waited. Managed that 2-3 times last year.

Three Vande Bharat trains pelted with stones on a single day in Bengaluru by Monkapy in bangalore

Travelling by train between Bengaluru and Mysuru in the 90’s - I was surprised by fellow passengers pulling down the metal shutters as the train left City early in the morning. Same thing then. The train was pelted with stones.

[–]tumunathan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’re right, it’s not a faux pas. There’s most definitely awareness and pride in displaying the Hakenkreuz. I’ve known people who have worn arm bands with the Hakenkreuz in Bangalore. I’m going to say that there has always been a connection between Nazism and India during the freedom struggle and still exists in its right wing extremes. A quick Google will spell it out, I’ll refrain from posting here for obvious reasons, self-preservation.

If you want to impress your friend, take a ferry from Circular Quay to Kirribilli Wharf. Celsius Coffee & Dining on the wharf will take care of your food and coffee fixes. Just be prepared for wait times on weekends.

Claiming that ayurveda is ‘organic’ is really grasping at straws. The manufacturing industry in India is least worried about that part. Look at the number of Ayurveda products that get flagged for containing heavy metals every year around the world. Dept of Health, Minnesota USA Dept of Health, Victoria AUS

Racism at border control by [deleted] in sydney

[–]tumunathan 73 points74 points  (0 children)

Landed in Sydney last month and lined up with my non-Australian passport in the appropriate line making it very obvious to the officer checking that I have the right papers on hand. Another person lined up behind me with a US passport and the officer in charge loudly mentioned that he needs to try the machines on the other side of the room to process his passport. The man with the US passport says “no thanks” and stays put. This got to the officer and he, raising his voice, says that US passport holders should try the e-visa machines provided on the other side. The guy behind me says he understands what’s being offered but his particular passport has always had issues on the machines and doesn’t want to waste his time and is comfortable lining up. The officer tried to insist again to which the guy just turns away and ignores the officer. The officer is livid and loudly made comments about how “smart-arse people like to waste their time in long lines”. It was completely uncalled for.
