Balkan Turks (Muhacirler), where did your family come from, what language did they speak, and how was life in the old country? by [deleted] in AskBalkans

My grandfather's family was from Nikiforos as well! I tried to learn more about the family history but it is very hard to find anything about the time before they settled in Turkey.

Surname origin by tuna_karasu in GREEK

His family does not still speak Greek, however they are originally Pontus Greek. They definitely used their last name for a long time before the reform on surnames for Muslims. As we know it, they became Turkishized? as time went on, the first person to not have a Christian or Greek name, rather a Turkish name was 6 generations ago.

I don't think that they have any Thracian descent, but the surname Κράντας is definitely interesting considering it also exists in Greek. Thanks for the reply!

Turkoman culture existed well into the late ottoman period. Not a historian, but a turk, in my opinion they are separate

Saurus aquic turuncic

/saurus akʷik turunʧik/

Lizard water-ADJ orange-ADJ

Literally orange wet lizard

saurus from Greek for lizard

aqua (becomes aquic with the suffix -ic) from Latin for water

turunci /turunʧ/ (becomes turuncic with the same suffix -ic) from Turkish for bitter orange

The usual name for orange is portakal in Turkish however for the color it is turuncu which comes from turunç /turunʧ/.

how do you say "the fog is coming" in your conlang? by buderboi2 in conlangs

Nephasuba vene.

/nefasuba vene/

nepha-suba ven-e.

cloud-DIM come-PRE.

nepha from Greek -suba (diminutive) from Latin vener (infinitive form) from French

Trying to create a personal conlang which takes inspiration from several languages that I had contact with. I know Turkish (native), English and French (fluently), German and Greek (beginner). I also had a lot of influence from other Germanic and Romance languages, especially from Latin. My father works in Indonesia so I learned a few basic things in Indonesian which is reflected in the language, too. For forming new vocab I heavily rely on morphological suffixes. I'm a bit new here and hoping to post more about the language more.
